Question:
I'd like to hear from post-op lightweights.

My BMI is 36, and I'm considering WLS, probably the LAP band. I'd like to hear from others about my size about your experiences: are you glad you had the surgery? Are you happy with the amount of weight loss? Was it worth the long-term changes you had to make since the amount of weight loss isn't as great as it is for some other patients? I know I can't lose significant weight by dieting, so my choices are either surgery or accepting myself as I am (including diabetes and other co-morbidities). Thanks!    — sjwilde (posted on March 5, 2003)

Hi there. I had a BMI of about 38 when I had lap. bypass in Sept. 2002. Today is my 6 month anniversary and I have lost 78 pounds, wearing a size 5 or 6 and exercising every day. People who know me thought I was crazy for considering "such a drastic" weight loss method but I knew the alternative was remaining obese, unhappy, and unhealthy. I had dieted my entire life and knew that it was never going to result in a permanent weight loss for me. Surgery was a viable option and one that I have been so very grateful for everyday since that day six months ago. If you ever want to chat with someone who knows exactly how you're feeling, feel free to email me.

Hi, Yes! as in would I do this again? You bet! My bmi was 38 and I weighed 223lbs. I also had type 2 diabetes which is the main reason I elected to have the RNY. My surgery was late Oct. '02 and I have lost about 50 lbs. I am off all diabetic meds (YES!!) and wearing a size 16. If my weightloss stopped here, I would be ok w/ it. I don't really want to stop here as I dream of being a skinny minny, but I have now entered the world of 'normal' sized people and it feels great to not stand out in a crowd for being 'fat'. It feels great to be able to join my son on his new trampoline and be able to jump, land on my butt and come back up to my feet (repeatedly) while my nine year old says, "gee Mom, that is cool"(grin). What do I not like about it? I sometimes miss being able to eat as much of something that I like to eat...simple things..like pigging out on crackers and cheese..or going to dinner and wanting to eat something that tastes realllly good, but having to stop once my pouch says 'enough'. I get over it tho' and realize that the saying is true, 'nothing tastes as good as thin feels'. It was worth it, definately.

Hi there! Let's see I was 263 at 5'4 & now I am 2 1/2 months post op down to 221. So that is alittle over 40 pounds gone forever. Even though it hasn't been as fast as I'd hoped for ... I am still really happy.

I started out at BMI 42 (5'8", 278 pounds). 13 months out, I am 160 pounds, BMI 24. So, I've lost 118 pounds. I can't believe how different I feel. I eat NORMALLY for the first time in my life. Food no longer dominates my life, and I feel good. I would have the RNY every year to feel like this.

Sandra, I started out at 5'6 and 253 lbs, by my 4 month anniversary I had lost 100 lbs, by my 1 year anniversary I had far surpassed my goal. today at 15 months post op I have lost a grand total of 135 pounds. I am maintaining at about 118 and feel great. I had the open RNY and I don't regret it for a minute:) Good Luck and if you have any other questions feel free to e-mail me:)

My BMI was 40 - 5'5", weighed 248, surgery was 6/10/02 and I've lost a total of 114 pounds in under 9 months. It's harder now to make the right choices because I don't "dump", can tolerate anything and now have to really concentrate on making the right food choices as opposed to before when I wasn't hungry and didn't crave sweets. BUT - I have never regretted the surgery because the results are very, very, motivating. Just don't ever forget that you WILL have to use discipline and good judgment.
