Question:
When you are post op, what can you take when you have headaches?

My doctor recommends only tylenol products. Aleve, Motrin and the like irritates the pouch. But the best thing for you to do is call your doctor to double check. Some doctors have a different opinion on this. Good Luck :)

I had a VBG so I don't have to worry about the sugar contents, but check out the new Excederin Quicktabs. They dissolve in your mouth with a pleasant taste. And they work SUPER quick.

My surgeon threw a fit when I told him that I take Advil for pain or headaches. It is supposed to be really bad for your pouch. He said Tylenol only. I don't know about the rest of you, but Tylenol does nothing to relieve my pain. Oh well. I'd rather be a thin person with a headache......

Our surgeon only allows Tylenol products. Aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like Aleve and Motrin carry too great a risk of inflaming the tender, new tissue at the suture line of the pouch in RNY patients. Marginal ulcers can be a true medical hazard of WLS patients. My daughter experiences "cluster headaches", and he also prescribed Ultram for her and it works wonderfully. Best wishes!

This was a big concern for me as I get migraine headaches. I use maxalt which has been absolutely wonderful for me. You put it under your tongue and it dissolves quickly so you don't have to worry about GI problems. It is a prescription and it has been a lifesaver for me.

Check with your surgeon and follow his advice. I asked my surgeon if I could take ibuprofen or Vioxx - he said yes to both! I have taken them each on occasion (9 weeks post lap RNY) with no problems. (BTW: I take Vioxx for menstrual cramps - one 25 mg tablet every 24 hours and no pain at all anymore! Beats the heck out of taking ibuprofen every 4 hours.)

My surgeon told me that anything I could tolerate before surgery, I should have no problem with after surgery (within moderation). I am 1 year post-op. I suffer from migraines. I take tylenol and ibuprofen as well as the "big guns" whenever I need them, and have had no problems. Listen to your body.

My surgeon told me ABSOLUTELY nothing else other then Tylenol. He claims, that for some reason, asprins such as Advil can cause ulcers when they sit in the smaller stomach "pouch". Better to be safe than sorry I say. Good Luck!
