Question:
Question about chocolate?
Hi, I just read a post about a fabulous fudge recipe for the holidays and I have a question. Can we eat chocolate? I thought it was too high in sugar and have steered clear of it since my surgery. Or can we use semi sweet chocolate OR is there sugar free chocolate that we can bake with. I use Splenda in everything I make, but I was afraid chocolate would hurt me. If not PLEASE let me know as I need to make some things for work for the holidays!! Have a happy! — Gina D. (posted on December 13, 2002)

I can eat chocolate. But I prefer to have it sugar free if possible. I find
that sometimes it can make me crave more... then I'm trapped in the candy
eating mode again. Then I have to fight the cravings all over again. But I
don't think the chocolate is bad for us, only the sugar.

If you are baking try coco....it has no sugar. Call a chocolate candy
maker in your area and ask them what they use in their sugar free candy.

Chocolate must be sugar-free chocolate. You can buy a grain sweetened
chocolate chip by a company called Sunspire and they are great! Check out
my profile page for some wonderful recipes and a recipe book or go to my

I use SugarLike for baking--tastes better than Splenda. For choc chips, I
use Dr Diet choc bars (sugar free). They're like a big Hershey bar? I
prefer the dark choc. It's so rich that just a small hunk melted on my
tongue is exquisite. But then I drink choc protein, too, so I get my choc
fix regularly.

I do eat chocolate (probably more than I should). I usually use real sugar
or fructose to bake with and stick with lower sugar recipes. That said, if
you are a "sneaker" like me (I continue to sneak little pieces as
long as it is in the house) be careful of making a lot of something tasty
that will lie around the house tempting you for days. I usually only make a
small amount of stuff or make it to take somewhere else where I can leave
the leftovers. It doesn't HURT me in the quantities I eat but, man, the
extra calories! I have a couple of recipes that are not chocolate but are
low in sugar or use fruit to sweeten. If you're interested I can email them
to you. Good luck!
