Question:
At what point post op should I be concerned about protein?

and what are some ways to get it in? I am still on full liquids.    — J. W. (posted on November 10, 2002)

I was told to start thinking protein and water 2 weeks out. What does your Doc's office say about pureed type food now? I used my mini food chopper to make tuna and egg salad (just add a little mayo and seasonings)' scrambled eggs. chicken and turkey slices-the deli ones are soft. When you chew well it is like "pureed" or soft. I also relied on whey protein low carb shakes and "drinks" - make yourself or get in containers. Learn how to count grams of protein. carbs. and fats. Watch out for sugar grams in the carb intake. I stayed away from milk but loved cheese. If you haven't tried milk - some people go for it - try it. Made me feel strange and has more carbs (sugar) than protein. Wendy's chile was a treat - I put it in the food chopper at first. Your pouch is swollen for about 6 weeks so be careful. Make your surgeon happy.

Always be thinking of protein! Try Taco Bell beans..great tasting and good source of protein. I added raw egg whites to protein drink powder shakes at times. Adding some banana to those protein shakes you make with the blender are a bonus for flavor..

We start protein supplements on Day 7. They want it on board ASAP to help the healing process.

My doctor started me on protein supplements the first day home from the hospital (2 days post-op). It really helped the healing process.

Try Isopure Zero Carb Protein. 20 ounce bottle provides 40 grams of whey protein and is a clear liquid.
