Question:
Help! What can I take post op for a bad cough post op?

I'm six months out and have a cold with a nasty cough. It has kept me up the last couple of nights and I'm wondering what I can take for it - Neo citeron used to be my bedtime drink of choice when I was ill - what now? Thanks so much!!    — Crystal M. (posted on November 3, 2002)

I used diabetic tussin - or sugar-free Robitussin (same thing). Any sugar-free cough syrup will work. HINT: Put a pinch of some sweetener in it first. They are totally nasty, but work well.

I have my doctor prescribe tessalon pearls. They are TINY round "pearls" that work very, very well -- though I am not sure they are appropriate for day use. Sodium Benzoate I think is the generic name. Also, vicks vapo rub is great too!

I babysit a child with severe Asthma and she takes a medication for her coughs called Norel DM, which has recently been removed from being prescription strength. I had the terrible cough at night so I borrowed hers and the very next day I went to the pharmacy and bought my own bottle, it worked like a charm. (I had to go to 2 pharmacies because 1 insisted that it was still by RX only and it is not, the other fixed me up a 4 oz bottle for $11.50 and it was an $11.50 well spent in my book) I am almost 1 year post op and had no trouble :)
