Question:
Too much B 12??? How can that be????

I just had some blood work done at the request of my Doc and all my labs are GREAT!!! But my B 12 was WAY high....1736, normal range is 500 - 1100. I am taking Trinsicon twice a day ( it has intrinsic factor and vitamins in it) a chewable kids vit, calcium and 1 sub lingual B12. I was told no more B 12. Has anyone else ever done this??    — Gina D. (posted on October 5, 2002)

Yes. Over the years, my B12's have been up over 2000. It doesn't seem to mean much as they next set of labs is down again. I continue with B12 and don't mess around with it. Last spring it was over 2000, 6 months before that, 640, last week it was 403. ??? BUT I got some needles that were too short, I think, hence the drop. I was just too lazy to take the box back. I'll be going today for the right type. Keep checking, and dont' assume that the level you are today is the level you'll be in a few months.

I started taking sublingual B12 (1000 mcg) every morning from the first week post-op on. My labs at 13 months post- op showed a value of 1156 (211-911 were normal at this lab). When I asked my nutritionist and surgeon about it they both said it was ok to be high and to keep taking the B12. I thought maybe I was taking too much but they didn't seem to think so.

You take a sublingual B-12 daily? I thought it was only needed three days a week?

My B12 is currently over 1500, but my internist insists that I still need to take my B12 shots.. I get them each month, and like Michelle Curran, my levels fluctuate. I had B12 levels that were consistent with the diagnosis of pernicisous anemia before wls.. and I really dont want my levels t become that deficient again. My internist said that you cant get toxic on B12.. it is one of the elements that the overload is excreted through your urine.. so a high number on your blood work this set of labs is not a big dear.. TAke care Hugs,
