Question:
Ladies what have been your experience with depo provera shot post op?

I have the shot over a year ago I don't know if it was the shot or my excessive eating cause the weight gain.    — HelpMeRhonda !! (posted on September 18, 2002)

I have been on the Depo Provera injections since 1994. Pre-op I stopped having periods becuase of the Depo Provera. I got them pre-op and continue to get them post-op. A few days after surgery I bled for about 5 weeks straight. Nothing I couldn't handle. Ever since then I have not had a period. I believe it is a good method due to the fact that you are not having a regular period so you are less likely to become anemic. BTW, Pre-op I gained 100lbs in 5 years while on the Depo but I take full responsibilty for it and know it was that I was eating badly and that caused the weight gain. Post-op I'm not having any problems losing weight. Lap RNY 3/6/2002 Down 94lbs (146lbs total)

I have been on Depo-Provera since 09/02. So far I have not had any problems losing weight. You have to realized even if you try to eat the whole house your new pouch will not allow you to. Surgery 4/16/02 down 55lbs.

I have been on Depo since 1999. I did not gain weight then nor have I had a problem losing weight since WLS on June 12, 2002. Preop I did not get my period. I had to go off Depo for a while due to Gallbladder problems and went back on Depo after my WLS/Gallbladder removal. Frankly I think it's the best thing invented by the medical profession other than WLS. :)

I took the shot for about 8 years (with a few breaks in between). When I got my surgery in July, I decided to stop the shot. There are several reasons. 1) the possible weight gain/hindrance to weight loss 2) lack of sex drive that can be a side effect 3) depression that can be a side effect (I struggle with this anyway.) 4) wanting to maybe have a kid in a few years and I know it can take that long to get out of your system and get fertile again 5) wanting to go without hormones in my body for a while I loved Depo because I didn't have any periods. And I may eventually go back to it. But I'm trying life without it for a while. Right now I am using Vaginal Contraceptive Film and am eagerly awaiting the reintroduction of the Today sponge.
