Question:
I need some advice on what I can change or add b/c I feel lightheaded and weak
Hey everyone I'm 1 week and 1day post op and feeling fine in the pain area...but eating is a problem for me...everything goes down fine, but nothing is appealing to me anymore (my tastebuds needs new batteries, lol) I would rather drink liquids all day long, but the problem now is that I'm always hungry and feel like I'm starving all the time now:o( I'm on soft foods and the taste doesn't appeal to me with anything I eat, I have to force myself to eat something...I need some advice on what I can change or add b/c I feel lightheaded and weak from time to time and I'm afraid I'm not getting any protein or any other nutrients in. I would like to keep my metabolism up, but at this rate it's going to go downhill...~~~BE IN TOUCH SOON~~~ — DIXIEVIX726 (posted on August 2, 2002)

8 months ago i felt as you do, i had fear i was slowly dying, my body not
getting what it needed, i told my doctor we had to do something. he told
me all of my blood work was good, which i couldn't believe, and that he'll
tell me when and what to add to my diet or meds.. and it did pass, but let
your surgeon know,he will decide what you may or may not need..the blood
tests, i hate needles, but they are very important to us. hang on it does
get better,, tomorrow is 9 months out for me and i have lost 225 pounds,
and i'm at my goal of 200 pounds as of this morning.. god bless

Take a deep breathe and relax. You are only a week out and your system is
still dealing with the drugs from the operations (this can take up to a
month to get out of your system) and the body changes. If you are drinking
you should be okay. Dizziness can be a sign of dehydration, but if you are
drinking it should be find. The best thing I did for myself was to get up
and walk. The first time it was around the yard, the second a little day
the road, the third was for 20 minutes, etc. The second week my mother
would take me on small day trips. The third week I was back to work. With
your eating, always follow your doctor's orders.

Dizzy? On blood pressure or diabetic meds? your body eating so little
changes a LOT, these 2 can make you feel wierd. Call your PCP and surgeon
for advice. Drinking will NEVER fill you up, so preptual hunger if you keep
that up. Try some spicy foods. Surgery and ketosis from the post op diet
affects our taste buds but dont fear its only temporary.

Don't mean to scare you, but I felt like you do now for the first 12 weeks
after surgery. I was light-headed, grouchy, felt dizzy, couldn't get in
any food (eating was a burden!), and I threw up literally 90% of what I
ate. YUCKOOOOO. I hated those days. But I at least took my daily
supplements (although I never did do those yucky protein shakes) and tried
to drink enough ... and around week 12, I was suddenly able to eat again.
Not a lot, but around 600 calories as vs. the 200 kcal/day I was eating up
to week 12. It made ALL the difference. My energy skyrocketed, and I felt
great all of a sudden. No looking back since! I've lost 190+ lbs. and
feeling great. Just be patient with your body and realize that it's going
to take a few months before you feel "in the swing of things"
again. Good luck!

Hopefully you are doing protein shakes to keep your energy up. At one week
out (I am three weeks post-op) I couldn't stand the sweet drinks any
longer. I went to a chinese restaurant and got egg drop (flower) soup with
just the broth and egg whites. Now my favorite food and it is very good for
you. You just have to keep trying different things until you find something
that agrees. I remember a friend of mine telling me that she tried taco
bell refried beans and they tasted like urine initially. Now 4 months out
she eats them all the time.

What you're experiencing is do to dehydration. Your protien is important
but this far out you haven't had time enough to get low on protien yet. I
went through what you are and I used pedia lite I drank 2 bottles a day for
3 days and I felt perfectly fine after that. For the first 3-4 weeks the
most important thing is getting enough fluid.

I am 3 weeks and 4 days post op. I have felt the same way since day 8. At
first I didn't think too much about it, but then I would get dizzy, full
total weekness and become incoherent. It ended up I was dehdrated. After a
trip to ER for fluids all the symtpoms left. I am still struggling to stay
Hydrated, and yes I am again dizzy each day. I have been told by other WLS
patients that after the initial week some of them got very week and
remained in bed until after week 4. I hope this helps. The worst thing
about all of this is that you can become to think you are all alone going
through this and the people around you don't know how to help. At any rate
I know what your going through.
Best wishes for recovery to you.
