Question:
I am bad because I drink one to two cups of coffee every morning?
I know caffeine is not good for us post op, but I drink at least one cup and no more than two cups of coffee every morning with splenda and fat free cream. Do you really see any harm in this? It's one of my simple joys left in my new lifestyle at 7 months post op. Do you still drink coffee also? — Annie H. (posted on June 16, 2002)

Annie: I am just like you. It seems I can't get the day started without
my coffee. I use Splenda and Soy milk in mine. I'm better than I used to
be, though. I don't drink any coffee once I get to work! 3.5 months, Lap
RNY, down 56lbs.

At 7 months post-op, I would think a couple of cups wouldn't hurt. I'm a
caffeine junkie, too. I need my 2-cup jolt in the morning (I'm almost 3
years out). But, "they" say to include an extra glass of water
for every glass (or cup) of caffeinated beverage. Those fluids are my
biggest problem, I've never been able to get in 64 oz., no matter what I
do.

If you are bad, I am wicked. I am a year post op and I take my two cups a
day, and then I switch to decaf. In the summer, I have been known to have
a diet pepsi too, very slowly, mind you, due to all the fizz. I know I
shouldn't, but you see, I am working with myself on several different
fronts and this one doesn't seem as crucial.

I am 5 months post op, and down 103 pounds. I not only drink coffee, I
drink ESPRESSO mixed with skim milk, skim milk gives me a lot of my
protein, I use Farmlands Best skim Plus which has 11 g of protien per cup.
So far the cafefine has not hurt me. My labs are good. I drink some kind
of milk drink every day, its worked well for me cause I do not do the
protein drinks, UGHHHH, and I love my coffee! Some days I do not feel like
eating much at all, like the last week, it was my time of month, I didnt
have ANY appetite, lost 10 pounds in 14 days, in the days before during and
after my period, but got my protein in because I drank my espresso-milk
concoction! So Im rationalizing but hey, at least it's nourishment of some
kind! I say, we give up a lot of really bad things, like smoking and
alcohol and sugar, I am not giving up my coffee!!LOL! P.S. my surgeon has
no problem with it as long as Im getting in my protein and my fluids.

Ahhh the ontological questions that are begged when someone says "Am I
bad?..." The difference is between BEING bad and DOING bad things.
Truthfully, drinking coffee doesn't qualify you as a bad being. Drinking
coffee with a malabsorption surgery undermines your calcium absorption,
which can count as doing something harmful to yourself. but I would put in
into the same category of harm as excessive masturbation. So, therefore,
my child, go forth and let your humanity run naked and free, until your
doctor tells you you have osteoporosis, then knock off the coffee.

I guess that we are all BAD. Coffee dehydrates so I was told not to but if
I did I should add that amount to my daily water consumption. Good Luck and
stay near a bathroom (-:

I just have to say... Merri, you're a hoot. I laughed out loud at your
answer :). I drink 2 cups of coffee a day, and make up for it by drinking
the extra water. I would imagine not drinking coffee would be ideal, but we
can't all be ideal can we?

Merri, I just have to say. I don't think you are a hoot at all. That was
the most obnoxious reply to question I have ever read.....comparing
caffeine to WHATEVER. If I coldn't have come up with a better comparision
that than, I don't think I would have replied. How offensive are you.

I still have my coffee in the morning. I did however, switch to decafe. I
don't know if you like decafe, but it could be an option.

I, too, continue to drink my coffee, actually I drink lattes. I also count
the protein in the milk toward my total intake. I sometimes have trouble
eating early in the day, but a latte always seems to go down just fine. My
labs have been fine so far, but I am due for a new set, so I guess I will
see if I'm still doing OK. I feel the need to chime in & say how witty
& amusing I, too, found Merri's reply. Thank goodness although the
Doctor removed most of my stomach, some intestines, and my gall bladder, he
left my sense of humor intact.
