Question:
Anyone else out there who absolutely can no longer tolerate eating meat?

Going on 7 months post op here, feeling GREAT, but I cannot eat meat no matter how I try, unless it's disguised in chili or in chicken & dumplings, etc. But to eat a burger, or a piece of chicken breat, pork chop, etc., forget it. My tummy hates meat, so I end up getting my protein other ways with shakes, daily, etc. Anyone else in the same boat? What are YOU doing to get your protein? It's getting boring.    — Annie H. I know they tell you not to drink with your meals, but have you tried taking a few little drinks to help wash the meat down? When I eat meat, I sip a little on water. It helps me get it down. Good luck!

I am so glad to find someone else that has the same problem I do. I am 2 months post op open RNY down 45lbs. I was a very big meat eatter before surgery. Now I can't stand it.When I do eat it..I get really bad stomach pains and nausea. It makes me sick to my stomach just making it for my family. Unlike you though I can't drink the protein shakes either. So I know I am not getting enough protein in. But I do every once in a while keep trying meat. But so far no luck. Hang in there like I am and maybe in due time things will change.

Hye, I was never a big meat eater before, so it doesn't bother me that much. But my favorite meat now is shrimp (not fried). I love it, and it's a very healthy choice. It also has a lot of texture to it, without being tough, so now I can enjoy the texture, too, instead of inhaling it like pre-WLS. Just a suggestion. Hope it helps, there are a lot of us that just really can't do meat like some. Hugs, Donna in AL

I am 4 months post-op, and just recently am able to eat a SMALL amount of chicken, if it is moist, and I mean small, like less than an ounce. I used to LOVE meat, seafood, chicken etc.. but seem to have lost the taste for it, I just dont want it anymore. I bought some of that really expensive tuna that comes in the pouch to try, it is very good and moist enough to eat without mayo. I eat beans every day and get most of my protein with beans, cheese, cottage cheese, eggs and yogurt and skim milk. I also take MAP protein pills every day. (link to Dan the Protein Man is on Kristin Ritter's web page) I have eaten a few bites of beef also. I mix seasoned cooked ground beef with refried beans, cheese, and taco sauce. Stick it in the microwave and eat it with some baked tortilla chips, its yummy and loaded with protein. I seem to crave spicy food. I also like poppers, which are jalapeno peppers stuffed with cheese, they are pretty high in fat but also protein heavy. I am having some trouble eating early in the am, I feel mostly like just drinking until about 10 or so, so I get 12 oz of skim milk steamed, with an added scoop of non-fat dry milk, (it makes it taste better, and adds 4-5 grams protein) then I add espresso and splenda for a yummmm cuban coffee. I am getting over 15 grams with this drink! Then I try to eat at least 1 ounce of cheese on a few crackers (7 grams), then I eat a yogurt (5 grams). For lunch, 4-5 ounces bean soup (make the 15 bean soup, comes in a bag less than 2 bucks, add an onion, some seasonings, its great) I buy the little containers that are dispoable and freeze 10 or so. They are easy to take to work and microwave good. Then later I may have a half of a protein bar or another ounce of cheese or maybe a spoon of peanut butter on a cracker (another 7 grams) I do the bean concoction for dinner or somethng similar, thats at least 20 grams. I find it easier to eat a small bit several times a day. Try some different combinations, see what works for you! Its mostly trial and error! I could not eat eggs at all until a month ago, they were an automatic pukefest, but my nutritionist said to try again, and it worked1 I eat 2-3 a week of the Farmland's best eggs, which are lower in fat and cholesterol. Good Luck and hang in there! BTW, I have lost 95 pounds since January 18 and I feel fantastic! No blood pressure meds, no diabetic meds, no meds at all! Love Donna (start 327, now 232)

Great ideas from the previous poster! More thoughts...it is all about how the meat is cooked post-op...because it is so dense, it really helps if it is cooked "wet", such as in casseroles, stewed and shredded, etc. At 11 months post-op I still do love meat, beef still works better than chicken for me, yet I have to be careful with either cooked on a grill, etc eating very small bites, chewin well and eating slowly. I love the whey protein drinks as they mix so smoothly and taste great jst with water and shaken...I feel so good as I drink them because I know they are so good for me. I also eat quite a few different kinds of nuts in sall portions as they are good for us. The white tuna with water in little one ounce servings are great to me too with just a few crackers.I do some cheese cubes with a few crackers too. I now can tolerate hard-boiled eggs too. Good Luck to you!

I have a chicken suggestion.... Try the McCormick bagged meal mix..the Italian Chicken is so good and goes down like a dream. All you have to do is add a can of tomatoes and some mushrooms and/or peppers (if you like). The chicken is so tender that you can shred it with a fork. It breaks down nicely and goes down so easy. I've had my issues with meat as well and I do fine with this. Hamburger (in any form) makes me sick instantly no matter what so I can sympathize with you! Good luck
