Question:
Can I eat too much?

Hey everyone, I am five and half months post-op. I am just wondering if I am eating too much. Let me explain. For example, today I brought me a sandwich to work (Turkey-breast meat-on white bread with mayo only). I was able to eat the whole thing in about 10 mins or so. And like right now I don't really feel "full" if that makes sense. I did not eat anything else with it or drink while I ate, nothing like that. It's like I'm still a little hungry. I don't feel like this everyday, I am just wondering if somehow today I am hungrier than other days. This really plays with your mind when your little quantity doesn't fill you up! I think if I had had lettuce and stuff like that on my sandwich it would have been more filling...or am I just making up phony excuses? Any advice?    — Craig A. (posted on April 2, 2002)

Craig, I'm not sure if this will help you but I am 10 months post op and I definitely have days that I can eat more (of course I usually blame it on PMS but that's not always the case). I do seem to get filled on bread quickly but I have eaten a whole sandwich a few times. If you are usually filled on 3 or 4 ozs of protein, you are probably fine. You could probably add some veggies or lettuce to help fill you after you've had the protein.

Craig, I am 3 1/2 months post op from an open RNY. I have found there are days when I am able to eat more food and days when very little fills me up. For example, I just had not quite one medium hardboiled egg for lunch and feel very full...too full, in fact. The other day I had shrimp stir fry and was able to eat close to a cupful. I was comfortable but not overfull. I don't know why this either.

Yes, I believe there are days when I feel I can eat anything and everything. I try not to go to the vending machines and in fact when I feel I'm real hungry, I'll go take a walk first for about 30 minutes and then return to eat. I try to push food away from me. I think a lot of times it's a mind game and I'm going to win!

I read on a web site recently that at 5 - 6 months a "part of the recovery process is a increased apetite, which is upsetting to those who had felt in control of their eating for the first time in their life" The article stressed to just keep doing what your suppose to do and it will eventually pass. The main part was continueing to listen to your body. I'm only 6 weeks out but found your comment interesting since I just read it. If I can have your e-mail i'll send the site, the address I copied doesn't bring up the right one.

I am 3 months p/o and for the first time I was REALLY hungry today. I've been hungry before, but not like this. This was not-satisfied after lunch HUNGRY! I was worried at first, but decided as long as I keep making good choices, I should be okay. If it continues, or I stop losing I will definately talk to my surgeon. I just wanted to let you know you aren't alone!! Good Luck!
