Question:
Is there anywhere to turn for financial assistance if uninsured?

Check with your state's Vocational Rehabilitation office. They have been
known to pay for this type of surgery based on the fact that obesity is
considered to be a disability. Keep in mind, however, that it is based on
income somewhat. I don't know what your situation is at the moment but it
wouldn't hurt to try. Best of luck to you! Sharon Robinson

If you have low income you might qualify for state medical. There are no
federal programs for individuals I've been able to locate. The funds
available are issued in block grants to states and its up to the states how
they disperse it (thus the Medicaid program). So basically it will depend
on your states management of resources as to what programs are available
and what their requirements are. Also you might check with your local
county. Some have programs that if you can supply proof of need they may
help you out with a portion of your medical expenses. I'm not sure about
other places but here you have to provide proof that you sought help
through the state health and welfare office, provide well documented proof
of your situation, finances, etc and go through an interview process. I've
heard on this site of state voc rehab as already mentioned. Other than
those, its pretty much self-pay unless you can find and qualify for an
individual insurance policy that covers WLS or find a job that offers good
insurance that will cover it. People mortgage homes, sell property, run up
credit card debt, and scrimp and save for this. I'm uninsured too and
struggling to self-pay. Good luck to you.
