Question:
I had the gastric bypass done Jan 2001..starting weight 440lbs

here we are almost two and a half years later weight 295..i even went back to the sdame surgeon Dr. Wongsa in Houston, texas to have my gallbladder removed and he never scoped me..never checks anything out..he said he couldnt help me..he said maybe "god" could!!! I have called his office and asked about revisions I was told it couldnt be done..since I was transected...I asked about "fistulas" they told me it was not possible for me to have one..they told me me it was no mechanicle failure that it was me..what do I do?? I have to get this weight off of me..is there truly nothing that can be done to help me?? I am sticking with the no carbs..protein..water..to no avail..I am so disappointed in Dr. wongsa..I have sent about 12 people to him and they have all be successful..it;s true he isnt such a polite person..but surely there is a surgeon somewhere in the state of texas that can help me..any advice from anyone would be appreciated..thanks    — tylerswife (posted on September 19, 2004)

Hi, and congrats on your HUGE loss so far. I had a surgery that failed ME in 2000, the VBG. I called around and was DESPERATE for revision. I found a WONDERFUL doctor and have sent like 15 people to him after me, some of them also revisions. He is AWESOME! Wichita Falls, Texas. He gave me hope that this thing could work. Do you know how much intestine was bypassed? Anyhow, best wishes to you on your search. I can relate to your feelings and disappointment, but truly, you have done GREAT thus far. Hang in there, girly. Lindi (-190 lbs Open RNY 10/31/02...FINALLY a size 10.)

Have you tried Dr. Ferrari? He did my revision, but he was also the surgeon that did my original VBG. You may need a longer bypass, you need to find out how much was bypassed in the first place. Call the hospital you had your surgery at and get the OR report - there will probably be a fee. It will state exactly what Wongsa did and how much he bypassed.

Rebecca, You don't need to see Dr. Wonsga to get the mechanics of your pouch checked out. Just about any gastroenterologist in Houston can scope you to get a look at what is going on in your pouch. That's the route that I would take since what you have tried has gotten you nowhere.

I dont know of any in TX - but hopefully someone can. I would get a copy of my records and go see another surgeon. 1) to have the mechanics checked out. 2) what did you have? at your starting weight, its possible doctor made you a proximal and that wasnt enough.. Its not uncommon for (especially larger) people to have to convert from a RNY to a DS. Dont stop fighting for what you need.!

If you are following all the rules, exercising, keeping your calories low, getting protein, water, vitamins, etc., and your doctor isn't cooperating, it's time to get the documentation to make your case for revision. Get to a gastroenterologist and get your mechanics checked. Then if you have a mechanical problem, you'll have solid grounds for getting it fixed.

Hi Rebecca, I had my first surgery in 2001 started out weighing 296 today I weight 214 I went and had the revision done July 12,2004 and my Dr. only put the smaller ring on my pouch. I had to pay for this my self and it cost me $10,000 and I have only lost 4.5 lbs. If you do get to have the redone make sure the Dr. is going to make your pouch smaller. If I would have known my Dr. was only going to put the smaller ring on and not redo my pouch I would have never had this done, I could have saved that money and done something else. Good luck.

Rebecca, forgive me for asking these questions but your profile is empty and your question above does not address everything. If you haven't done so already, you need to take an honest look at the follow:.are you exercising? How much and how often? Are you eating junk food/snacking? How much water? How often are you eating, and what are you eating and how many calories a day? Do you feel full after eating? If you are able to stick to a 1200-1400 or so calorie plan, high on protein, lo in carbs and sugars, eat small meals frequently thru the day, no drinking with meals and plenty of regular heart pumping exercise and still are not losing weight, then something is wrong. Don't give up on finding the right answer. On a good note, you have lost lost 145 pounds...

I second the recommendation of Dr. Warnock. He is absolutely wonderful and has been doing this for many, many years - including revisions. If you're sure you're doing everything you are required to do and still not losing, see Dr. Warnock.
