Question:
How do you get all the protien in?

I was wondering-- I hear everyone talking about getting three meals, protien shakes, water... Sounds like A LOT to put into that small of a pouch. Are the shakes instead of meals, inbetween meals? Does the water used to make a shake count toward your water intake? I guess if some of you could give me an example of what you eat during the day and how you get it all in it would be helpful.
It isn't as difficult as it seems once you get into a routine and find foods that agree with you.

Here is an example of a typical day for me:

Morning:
Vitamins with milk (Carb Countdown) 10-12 ounces for 15 - 18g protein.

Breakfast:
yogurt 6g progein

Lunch:
Yogurt if I'm at school or something else with 6-12g of protein.

Protein Drink
Isopure Zero Carb with 40g protein

Dinner:
2 ounces of chicken or another protein source for 6-8g protein.

Evening Vities taken with 8 - 12 ounces of CarbCountdown milk.

Throughout the day, I drink A LOT of decaf tea with Splenda and Minute Maid Light Lemonaide. When I'm at home, I make and drink lots of hot tea. I'm hooked on many of the Celestial Seasonings flavors. I usually make a 32 ounce mug of tea and will refill it at least once or twice. Getting in a minimum of 64 ounces is easy. Most days, I drink at least a gallon of low/no calorie, non-carbonated, and caffeine free beverages.

How about you should be getting not 3 meals a day but 6 meals a day. Your protein should be part of each one of those meals.

Erin, Nice name by the way. I drink ISOPURE. It is not a shake. It is a "clear liquid" and tastes like fruit punch. I just have not problems with that. I also keep a bottle of water with me everywhere I go. Good Luck

Hi I am only 3 months postop and I am doing well on the protein. My surgeon recommends 3 meals a day and no snacks so for breakfast I have designer whey protein mixed with fat free carb countdown for 30 grams of protein some days I mix fruit with it. Lunch is a meat, cheese, cottage cheese combination of to equaL least 20 grams of protein and add well steamed veges. Dinner is the same routine for lunch unless I have been to exercise and just don't feel like eating then I repeat the protein shake so this gives me anywhere from 70 -80 grams min. a day. Your body can only absorb 30 grams of protein at a time so don't waste alot on really high protein count drinks I have seen some that say 50+ grams and they are usually very expensive. Also another thing is if you are taking iron DO NOT take it with calcium or milk products they need to be about 2 hours apart because they will cancel each other out and we can't afford to waste our vitamins either. I take my calcuim with my shake in the morning and at the evening meal and multi with iron mid morning and bedtime. Good Luck it does get easier.......Nancy

Erin...I usually have 8 oz skim milk mixed with 1/3 cup non-fat dry milk (it gives me extra protein and my dietician suggested the following menu) for breakfast or my mid morning snack. If I don't have the milk for breakfast, I have 6 oz lite fruit flavored yogurt with 1/3 cup non-fat dry milk added (if I have yogurt for breakfast, the milk is mid morning snack). The milk with added milk powder equals 16 g protein and the yogurt with added milk powder equals 15 g protein. Then, for lunch I either have 2 oz of baked chicken mixed with 2 TBSP pickle relish and 2 TBSP non-fat mayo or 2 oz ground turkey breast (white meat only!!) mixed with 2 TBSP Ragu traditional spaghetti sauce and 2 TBSP mild picante sauce. I have to put the baked chicken in the food processor and grind it to look like saw dust or I get very sick when I eat it any other way. The ground turkey doesn't bother me at all. I brown it in the skillet with PAM just like I would brown hamburger. I also have something around me to sip on at all times. I generally manage to get 24 oz water, 32 oz crystal light, and 16 oz milk per day. Sometimes, I can get in more water, sometimes not that much. But, as soon as I feel full and a little uncomfortable, I stop eating immediately. Hope this helps.

My surgeon says protein shakes do not take the place of meals. I drink two shakes a day and three very small meals plus snacks. heck, I eat all the time.

My surgeon says that early on its impossible to get all the protein in, but after a month or two our ability to eat gradually increases and we can meet the goal. pre op were like a overstocked warehouse bulging at the seams, with inventory clogging the aisles. So since were so well nourished pre op as posties were safe for awhile.

I am almost 4 years post op and I drink Extreme Smoothie that comes ready mixed in a can. I can has 35 grams of protein, 160 to 170 calories and very little carbs. I drink a can in the morning for a snack and a can in the evening for a snack. I also count that toward my daily fluid intake. Just over a year ago when I started taking hormones I gained 15 pounds in a flash. Then I leveled off and have stayed there. I credit the protein supplements and lots of liquids with making me successful. It's not nearly as difficult as you think. Best wishes to you!
