Question:
anti inflammatories

Are there any anti inflammatories that we can take? I am 2+ years post op. I have developed carpal tunnel due to my job and because I don't know any anti inflammatories that I can take, the doctor I saw would only prescribe me darvocet for the pain. I emailed my surgeon, but being the weekend, I don't expect to hear back from him until Monday. I have to make an appointment with the hand surgeon and I want to be able to tell him/her a medication that can be prescribed. Thanks everyone!! Have a Sparkling Day!! ~CAE~ — Mustang (posted on March 6, 2004)

Hi Christine,
I have arthritis in every joint in my body. The medication I could take was a big concern to me pre-op. I talked to my surgeon. He told me that I could take whatever I needed, but I would have to take Zantac, also.
I have been doing this since surgery (I have to take aspirin daily because I have had a heart attack, and I take another medicine with aspirin for "microstrokes".) I have not had any problems with my pouch with this regime.
Good luck to you, and I am keeping you in my prayers. Hope you feel better soon.
Linda

I have had carpul tunnel for 11 years. I tried anti-inflammatories for years all to no avail. about 6 years ago I went to a neurosurgeon and he began giving me Nerve Block shots in my wrists. The shots were horrible but the pain was gone almost immediatley! And I would have blessed relief for at least 6 months between shots.About 4 months ago, I mentioned these Nerve Shots to my GP and he suggested I take B6 tablets, 50 grams 3 times a day. I did and I haven't had ANY pain from Carpul Tunnel on almost 2 months. Hope this helps you.

I have had CT for almost 10 years. When I was pregnant the pain was unbearable. I suggest that you wear your wrist splints (you can get one at a pharmacy) and watch your salt intake. Once I cut out salt or lower it my pain went way down and now I have hardly any problems except near PMS time when I retain fluid. RNY 1/27/04 350/310

My surgeny gave me Vviox for anti inflammatories. It work well for me. There is also Celebrex. Good luck though, most insurances don't want to pay for these durgs. If your doctor is good he/she will know to do the paper work to get your insurance to approve them.

Hi There, I too suffered fo many years from carpel tunnel syndrome. I finally heard of chiropratirs helping with this. I got up my nerve and reserched them. I found one in my area who had graduated from Palmer in Iowa. It's the top school in the country. Well, after two visits I was feeling groovy. I now have no pain at all, and the best part is I did not have to take drugs anymore, which by the way only temporaily relieved my pain.Good Luck, Ann

My surgeon like most, prefers that you don't take them, but if necessary, just be sure that your stomach is full, and not too often. Good luck. I also was a carpal tunnel sufferer, and just about reversed it by wearing the hand splints just about all the time, and losing weight. There was less pressure on the nerves when I lost the weight, and retained less water. Good luck!!

My surgeon gave me Vioxx immediately after surgery. I have been told the Bextra is also safe for WLS patients.

I had carpal tunnel in both hands, as did every female member of my family! Ibuprofen and NSAIDs can be taken at times with no ill effects, as others posters have said, with food in the pouch. (I have never had any problems with the occasional ibuprofen or Vioxx.) Next to WLS, the surgery on my hands was one of the best things I ever did! I used to have so much pain in my arms that it would wake me up from sleep. (I was doing home nursing at the time, and I am sure all the driving and writing I did made things worse.)Medications adn splints had no effect after a while, so surgery was the option. Not really painful, and relief was immediate. Good luck!
