Question:
Has anyone had any trouble swallowing peanut butter and crackers?

Peanut Butter and crackers are one of the soft foods that can be eaten. Everytime I eat peanut butter and crackers I feel it going down my throat roughly. I only eat it once in a while because of the way it goes down.    — Sharon T. (posted on July 3, 2000)

This is one of the food I lived on in the beginning. Just make real sure to chew well so that the cracker gets moist. I know it's hard as you can't drink while you eat. I also find cream cheese with crackers to go down real well. I especially like Wheat Thin Lights with flavored cream cheese.

Hi Sharon: I can eat peanut butter with crackers, usually, but peanut butter with toast or an English muffin sticks together in my pouch and makes for a most uncomfortable feeling. Strange!

Be sure to eat smooth, not chunky peanut butter.

Peanut butter and crakers have been my favorite snack food since surgery (post-op 4 months). I have found that the brand of peanut butter makes a difference, Peter Pan is the moistes I've found and it goes down better. I do drink(sip)when I eat, so that helps too. Also make sure you use just saltine crakers and not Ritz or any of those. Good luck.

I can eat 1/2 of a peanut butter and all friut jelly sandwich without problems. I do sip hot tea or water between bites. In the beginning crackers worked much better than bread now I can eat either. I am 10 1/2 months post-op. I happen to like Peter Pan best, I have not tried any other kind. Be careful not to consume too many calories!

I didn't attempt peanut butter for about 8 weeks post-op. Now I can handle half a PB&J sandwich with no problem. Peter Pan makes a whipped version which I've used for years for its easy spreading. It feels actually "lighter" going down, too.

Sharon - the trick is smaller dabs of peanut butter! Sometimes I'll put a dot of Pollander all-fruit jelly on it. Same with cream cheese and crackers. Smaller dabs does the trick.
