Question:
Is the post op diet for BPD/DS the same as for RNY?

I had the DS surgery almost 3 weeks ago, and when I left the hospital, they
told me I could eat anything that would settle well, and if it didn't to
not eat it. They gave me a list of things high in protien that I should
eat. When I was still in the hospital they were bringing me whole meals
after the first 2 days, like french toast, or a whole sandwich. One night
they even brough meatloaf. Although with the DS you can go almost straight
into eating (almost) anything, it is just up to each individual and what
their system can tolerate. At this point I can eat just about anything,
with a little trouble with lactose intolerance. In the beginning I stuck to
soft foods, and anything with a saltine cracker. I think with the DS you
can tolerate some foods a little faster, and you get moved to
"solids" alot faster. It has worked out well for me, anyway, and
it is my understanding that with the DS you can eat a little more, although
personally I'm lucky if I can eat much at all. I know this perspective is
more on the Duodenal Switch, but I know there are several people from this
site that will have more on the RnY.... I hope this helped!

The diet after surgery with the DS varies from doctor to doctor. I am just
over a week postop. In the hospital I was offered water, ice, jello and
juice. When I was discharged my diet was basically a soft diet. So at Day
4 I could have oatmeal, eggs, cottage cheese...soft foods. It's hard to
get those things down so I stick with ice water and protein shakes for the
most part.

I don't know a lot about the BPD/DS diet, as I'm RNY. But, I have the
dumping feature, especially on fatty foods. I can eat a cup of food at a
time/ more or less depending on various factors like type of food, texture,
how relaxed or uptight I am at the time, etc. It varies. I don't feel
deprived at all. I am somewhat lactose intolerant since about one or two
months postop but have no problems with cheese and yogurt.

I had open DS. After I took my swallow test on the 3rd day postop, I was
cleared for real food. In the hospital, I was served, bacon & eggs,
beef strogonoff, grilled salmon, potatoes, rice, etc.... you get the
picture. Mind you... I was only able to eat a bite or two at that point,
but it was real food & it was good! I always concentrate on protein.
I ate alot of eggs, cheese, lunch meats, stuff like that. At one year
postop my nutritionist suggested I get at least 6 oz of protein for about
56g's in per day. That's it really... the eating is fabulous! Each doctor
has his own protocol for eating, so it does vary a bit.. Good luck to you!

I had an open BPD/Ds exactly 1 month ago today. By day 2 in the hospital I
was eating mashed potato's,pureed string beans, spinach, pureed
carrots,banana's,oatmeal,eggs-anything soft. Today I've had the insides of
stuffed shells,meatloaf,scallops,grilled cheese,pork chops-every now and
then a few(like 4) potato chips, fat free ice cream and all. I'm so happy
with this decision. I'm down 30 lbs. I have eaten 1/2 turkey or roast beef
sandwiches and all. I don't dump but I stick mainly to sugar free stuff
only because of the wasted calories and all. I would do this again in a
heartbeat if I had to!
