Question:
When can we eat, if ever, corn as well as popcorn?

The information I got from my surgeon suggests that corn may be difficult for us to digest post-op and I was just wondering if anyone out there has tried it, and how long post-op before trying it? Fresh corn on the cob is one of my favorites. Also, my favorite snack is popcorn and I am wondering if popcorn is better or worse than regular corn. When might I try eating popcorn again? I am way ahead of myself, I am not eating anything at all yet, only 9 days post-op lap rny. Thanks    — Kim D. (posted on April 18, 2001)

I am a little over 9 weeks post op Lap RNY. I tried popcorn for the first time about 6 weeks post-op. It is one of my favorite snacks. A little goes a long way and I've had no problems with it. I have not eaten any other corn yet, as I'm waiting for the fresh stuff to be in season - no canned for me, I'm spoiled! Remember, every surgeon is different about what they want you to eat and when - so be sure you stick to the guidelines.

Kim, I did have some trouble when I first tried corn a month or two after surgery. When I tried it again, maybe 6 months post op, I had no trouble with it. The same with popcorn, altho I didn't try it til several months post op. I still don't eat corn too often or in too large of amounts, but small amounts work fine for me now. I enjoy popcorn as an occasional snack.

Popcorn is one of my favorite snacks. I am almost 8 months post op and have been eating it for at least 4 months now with no problem. I had my first corn on the cob last week and didn't have any problem with that either. The main difference is that I ate about 1/3 of a 1/2 an ear of corn instead of the usual 2 ears!

Ditto on the popcorn as a nice snack! I have it once in a while, but I'm just careful when I chew and chew one kernel at a time. If I feel a piece is too hard and won't mush I spit it out. As to corn, I don't do it very well and avoid it, or just eat a little bit. Not my favorite food anyway.

I have no trouble with Corn. I love it. It goes down very well. As far as popcorn, I do that well also. I don't have it often, but when i do, i chew it carefully. Don't want anything getting stuck.

I also am a cob-a-holic. Oh man, it is the ONE thing I actually overate at the 6 yr mark. The sweetest, babies little kernels last summer! Here's the deal. Corn is kinda high in sugar, so I don't indulge all the time. When I have it, it IS the meal or else I don't feel good. Now, maybe you have to have YOUR corn for lunch that day and then the rest of the meal for dinner with the family. So, I don't have it daily when it's in season, but it is a sepcial event! Popcorn makes a great high stress food, as far as I'm concerned. It has NO nutritional value, but if you're stressed, it's way better than cookies. There's a lot of hand-to-mouth action with it, you can chew it or melt it on your tongue, so you can get the texture thing going. It has very few calories and we largely malabsorb the fat/butters, so it's a no-guilt food, too. Of course, knowing I CAN have it any time just about sealed up how often I need it! LOL!
