Question:
How soon before eating Steak? What cut?
How soon before eating steak? I've heard that a filet mignon is the leanest cut, but then again, I've also heard that a sirloin is. I know it's not good to eat it very often, just a once in a while thing, but I can't wait to eat just one bite - 5 wks. p/o. — ScottieB86 (posted on January 8, 2004)

I was told from the beginning to wait about 6 weeks before eating beef and
I did and still have a problem with steak. I am 9 months post-opt and I do
not have a problem with hamburger, or roast, its just steak..no matter how
tender, I just can't seem to eat it well enough to digest it. If I eat it,
its only a couple of bites. I've always loved a nice juicy tender steak,
but not anymore...just settle for those couple of bites of my husbands.

FIrst tried at 4 weeks (when my Dr. said I was OK for full foods) I had a
tenderloin cut. It was one of those melt in your mouth steaks. It was
great. I have never had any problems with any steak. Hamburger? Now
that's another story (I think it has to do with fat content of the
hamburger) So- when your Dr. says OK, go for it. JUST CHEW CHEW CHEW!
Happy steak eating!

Who says its not good to eat it very often? A nice lean steak is a great
source of protein! I eat steak all the time. I think I tried steak at about
6 weeks post-op and I usually have the top round. The more you cook it,
though, the tougher it is, so if you don't like medium rare meats, I
suggest you try the filet as the tenderest cut. Just chew it very well and
small bites when first starting out. You never know what foods set well
when first trying them as a newbie post-op. Sauces help too...

I love the taste of steak, but unfortunately, I'm unable to chew it enough
to eat. I'm 16 months post-op and still can't do it! I usually end up
eating it anyway, then vomiting it up. I don't WANT to vomit, but I just
can't seem to chew it enough. But it IS a good source of protein if you can
keep it down!

I love steak and I eat it quite often. Small piece of NY strip, I have also
eaten a small amount of prime rib without a problem. I really havent had
any problems with meat in general, dont eat hot dogs or sauage etc. I have
had problems with chicken breast --just too dry. Chew everything well

initially filet made me hurt & vomit. somebody recommended I try a
ribeye and hit it with plenty of meat tenderizer and It went down great. I
still have to be careful with the leaner cuts, the well marbled ones sit
the best.

I LOVE steak! It has so much nutritional value that as long as you don't
abuse basic pouch rules, it should be great for you. Unfortunately, I am
unable to eat piece by itself. I have to have some type of starch(like a
tortilla or a little bit of potatoes)to keep it down without pain. So far
my favorite is Taco Bell grilled steak taco. It has worked absolute wonders
for me (DON'T BLAST ME FOR THE CARBS!). Very rarely can I eat the whole
thing.
If you have a problem with steak, please do not assume it will never work
for you. I continue to try it alone and it is getting more tolerable, just
not perfect yet.
Best wishes!!!

Although my doc didn't put much restrictions on or make me drink shakes or
anything, the one thing he did say was to not eat steak for 8 months. Not
a problem for me, I'd rather eat chicken and veggies anyway. I'm almost 13
months out now and have only done chicken fry (cube steak) and pork roast,
toughest meats I've had. But that's more a personal thing for me.

I am a month po today and I tried steak last week. It was fajita steak
meat and I just chewed it very very well. It went down fine, but I haven't
had problems with most foods.

Hey, it's me (original poster). Thanks for all your posts. I still
haven't been brave enough to try it yet, and I'll wait until doc says it's
ok. HOWEVER, for any of you craving steak, try this: Gorton's Classic
Grilled Salmon (in the frozen food near the fishsticks). It's DELICIOUS
and has a smokey outdoor grilled flavor, and my husband and I both think it
tastes like a rare steak. DEEE-LICIOUS!

My doctor seems to be much stricter than most, he says only liquids for 6
wks, then soft foods for 6 wks. then add one thing at a time. He says
shrimp, lobster, cheese and beef are the things that cause the most problems
and recommends adding beef last at about a year. I know one person who got
a piece of fish stuck and another that ate mozzerella cheese that got
stuck. They were miserable. So please be careful.

I'm a year out and still really can't eat it. I just feel like throwing it
up. I don't know why but it does not sit well with me. I can tolerate
most other foods.

I was told to wait 6 mos. before trying beef. It took a while after that
before I could tolerate it. Now as long as I stick with really lean,
tender cuts of beef, I do pretty well. I can do about 3 oz. of beef at a
sitting.

I ate Beef Jerky and Steaks from day eight. No I was supposed to be on
pureed foods. But I never pureed foods... except in my mouth to chew to
liquid. Not liquid? Then I would'nt swallow. Don't see what difference it
made if it was pureed in a blender or my mouth, just as long as it was
pureed. I did well. But I never swallowed anything whole that was to be
pureed. So I did meats as soon as I was off the liquid stage and was to be
doing pureed.
