Question:
Ok, with the permission of my surgeon I drank alcohol for the first time,
I've done lots of research on this topic, not that I am a heavy drinker (barely do it at all!) But just out of curiousity I have read up on all the affects. So anyway I turned 26 and decided to have a little party got some vodka and cranberry juice and really expected to be drunk within 1 hour, however I drank 3 glasses without any signs of a buzz whatsoever!! So I gave up and went to bed, now everyone I have encountered on this sight says alcohol affects them so quickly now, could there be something wrong with my surgery, I also notice I am eating more than most on the sight and losing less!! Anywhere else experience this? Thank You — Melissa S. (posted on May 29, 2003)

I'm 8 months post-op and had 6-7 beers a couple of weeks ago. Barely a
buzz, whereas pre-op, I'd have been plastered. I have no idea what's up
with that. By the way, this is the first alcohol I've had since surgery, so
it's not like I could've built up a tolerance or anything. I'm perplexed!

Firstly....don't preach to me please!! I'm human and enjoy a good buzz.
Okay...9 weeks out and drank 5 glasses of wine this past sat. night. Got
smashed to pieces and won't be doing that again any time soon because it
scared me to be able to drink so much. I never lost control. I had a
blast! But it worried me that I drank so much and continued. For my next
"bar" event, I will drink water every other (at least) drink.
Had alotta fun, though. I was a big binge drinker pre-surgery (meaning I
would go out once every 2-3 months and tie one on by drinking about 8-10
beers over the course of many hours). Please, once again, no preaching.
Thanks! : ) good question, by the way!!

I am preop, btu best friend post op. Alcohol arely affects her. She can
out drink me like it was water. Shots do have an affect though...She calls
it her 7 minute high. 7 min for the time she downs is she can feel it wale
on her, but after that 7 minutes, she is back to normal. Werid or what! I
guess it all depends on the individual. She is 2yr post RNY and down 165#

Nicki, please tell your friend that the surgeon is trying to lay the blame
on her for the surgery's failure. Staple line disruptions are almost
always caused by the stomach tissue rejecting the staples. It's not her
fault, and if you think about it, the stomach tissue is doing what it's
supposed to do...rejecting a foreign object. It really gets my goat
(that's a nice way of saying what I'm really feeling) when surgeons have to
blame the patient for their own or the surgery's failures. I'm not saying
the drinking is a good thing, but it's probably close to impossible for
that in itself to have caused the SLD. BTW, I drink socially, and I also
can drink almost as much as I did pre-surgery. But, I don't drink sweet
drinks or do shots...vodka & club soda with lemon is my drink of choice
these days.

The first time I drank I felt nothing and I really wanted to. I was so
mad. But the second time.....boy howdy I felt it almost instantly. So on
your next little excursion you might want to watch it a little.
Good Luck

I'm 4-1/2 months out and have an occasional drink (once a week or less).
I've lost only 42 pounds, and only had 80 cm bypassed, but it was enough to
change the way alcohol affects me. Even half a glass of wine affects me,
though the effect goes away in less than 1/2 hour. Also, I find I get
pretty sick on rum (even a tiny amount).

I'm with Beth, after a few sips of wine I feel the buzz coming on. After
half a glass, I'm fully intoxicated. After the whole glass, I'm under the
table. But the effects wear off fast too. After about 30 minutes.

Well, Im a social drinker, but I hate beer, I drink non-sweet drinks, or do
shots. One shot of anything, and I pretty much have an immediate
buzz....pre-op when I drank a significant amount I would have a headache
and be nautious the next day, now I can drink the same amount and be fine,
so that's a plus. RNY 7-3-02 loss of 140#
