Question:
My nutritionist give us the following parameters (5 month's post op)

and I want to know if anyone else's plan is similar and have you succeeded in losing and maintaining the weight? Calories: 900-1200 per day. Fat: 30 grams per day. Carbs: 100-150 per day. Protein: 70-80 per day. Sugar: No more than 10 grams per serving. Thanks for all your input! :-)    — Pizofret (posted on May 28, 2003)

I'm only 5 weeks out, but that seems like an awful lot of carbs fat and sugar. I'm on 50-60 g protien, 25g or less of carbs, and 5g sugar or less (preferably zero according to my nutritionist). I'm also at about 400-600 calories daily. out 5 weeks, down 29 lbs.

LIsa, I think that plan sounds pretty good to me and pretty realistic. Doing 15grams of carbs per day is very difficult, and while some or many people can do, many cannot. Great if you can do it, but I wouldn't want to be on the strict atkins post-op. I've followed a similar plan to what yours is and I got to my goal in less than a year and have surpassed it since. I prefer to live my life with a goal of moderation and not following a strict "diet." I always get atleast 75grams protein, atleast 80oz water, and I make sure carbs are less than 20grams per meal, but that also doesn't mean I eat them at every meal. I also don't count fat, but I make sure not to eat higher fat foods or fried foods. But everyone is different and have different things work for them. Goodluck to you :-)

The problem I have with most nutritionists is that their meal "plans" are usually set up for a multitude of people and not the individual themselves. Everyone has a different carb-need level - and a point that is too many for them. For me it's about 50 to 60 grams a day. Any more than that and I don't lose and can easily gain. I REALLY suggest you try her/his plan and they play with it to get the best results for YOU!

I assume your nutritionist has experience with WLS post-ops? The advice sounds normal for non WLS for sure and may work for post-ops too. Are you sensitive to sugar? If not, then 10 grams is not alot, but some post-ops could not handle that much without dumping or triggering sugar cravings. I'd also keep the carbs to the lower end, closer to 100, than 150, but the calories are about right. Most of us do not count fat grams as we have some malabsorption of fats occuring post-op.
