Question:
Spicy food

I'm sure this has already been asked by someone else. I am waiting on the answer back from my insurance company and I was reading through some of the questions. How long after surgery would it be before I could eat spicy food?    — Eric S. (posted on May 19, 2003)

Eric, I am 2 weeks post op and have been eating tobasco sauce now for about a week, i used it to spice up broth and now i use it on eggs. It seems my tastes are so screwed up i really need something with a zing..

Eric, I ate Hot & Sour soup at the Chinese restaurant from about two weeks out. I didn't eat other really spicy things, though, til after 6 weeks.

Eric, I think it's really trial and error with stuff like that. Although I would wait probably a month, b/c you probably shouldn't be eating anything with the consistency that spicy food usually is (ie. chicken, beef) since the first month you should be on liquids/pureed. If you try it and it makes you feel horrible, then you know to wait a little bit more. Often times what someone can't handle now, they can in a month, or vice versa. Goodluck to you!

My tastes were really out of wack for a long time after surgery. I bacame addicted to spicy food because of it. I had a really tough time eating meat for about the first four or five months. The only way I did get meat down was things like spicy chili or super hot buffalo wings. I couldn't eat a plain pork chop but I could eat it smother in that Ketchup with a Kick. I never ate like that prior to surgery and I don't now. Just for a couple of months in the beginning.

I waited long enough to be off the liquid diet. By week two I was eating fat free refried beans with cheese and hot sauce (the hot sauce actually helped thin the beans out) and sometimes cayenne pepper too!

I was on pureed food the first 4 weeks. I just couldn't tolerate pureed vegetables, but I could drink V-8 juice - but only with tobasco sauce added!
