Question:
Open RNY'ers - did you get a cortisone shot in your scar?
I heard that getting a cortisone shot in your scar will flatten it out and make it a little less noticable. Is this true? Thanks alot. — jengrz (posted on May 5, 2003)

I can't tell when you had your surgery from your profile, but at 11 months
out, my scar has faded substantially, and is barely visible through all the
folds of extra skin on my stomach (yes, I'm sporting the "melted
candle" look!). With more time, maybe it will fade more?

Jennifer- yes this can be done at your dermatologist. Is your scar keloid?
Usually most people who have keloid scars will do this b/c it looks like a
big purple worm. I did the cortisone and it flattened a little bit, then
got an infection, and now its back to the same. My derm. said it's
successful for most people (I just always happen to be unlucky!) BUt I'm
going to try again- it takes away the burning and itching as well. Goodluck
to you!

I hadn't heard about getting a shot...but my physical therapist has
mentioned scar massage. My surgeon said he didn't know anything about it,
but that I could do whatever I want although it might still be tender for a
couple of weeks.

Oh, and I meant to say that some of the burning, pulling & itching was
gone the very next day!
