Question:
what is the difference between transected and stapeled? Which one is best? Which on

My understanding is that transected is cut, and stapled is stapled. Many doctors staple, then transect, so there is less chance of a staple line disruption, causing leakage to the no longer used part of the stomach. From what I've read, if the stomach is both transected and stapled, the additional scar along the transected edge of the pouch reinforces the staple line, therefore less opportunity for disruption. Those who are more knowledgable please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi~ A G is right that is what transected means. If your just talking about the 2 of them transected is by far the better of the 2. However a complete stomach seperation is even better, but it greatly depends on where they attach your bypass on the pouch the top or the bottom. If they attach on the top it is really not that much better than just being transected, but still a little better, If they attach at the bottom this is the best you can get with a RNY. I've researched this in very great detail to make sure I understood exactly what the differnce is in the many different procedures, and to better understand what I was going to have.

I've had both. Let me put it this way. Had I been transected the first time, I'd have only had one surgery. But I was done in the dark ages, stapled only. No, I don't care how many rows, how much oversewing. I still had to go through the whole ins game and recovery--all over again. I did it. And I'd do it again. But you have a choice.

Same here, Michelle! When I had my original rny I really KNEW I wanted transection at that time, the surgeon did not do it. Still, three months later he started doing it. At about 6 months, my eight (8) rows of staples had disrupted a little at the top of the pouch and I quit losing! I went in at 11 mos and was transected and now I am very happy! Two surgeries.....or one....transected or not....your choice but if it were me, always transected!
