Question:
Do any of you post-ops remember having no appetite 3 weeks post-op?

I am now 3 weeks- soon to be 4 weeks post-op. I am still on the puree stage per my doctor. I am at the point where I really would rather not eat and don't even feel hungry. I am taking all of my supplements (vitamins and such). Does this change?? Soon? Ever??? I am down 28 # so far- yeah!! Thanks for your responses in advance !!!!!!!!!    — Kewpidoll (posted on March 28, 2003)

Everything is okay with you. I remember not wanting anytime to eat for the first three months..

I'm coming onto four months and would almost always rather not deal with eating...I have been truly hungry about four times since surgery. I also don't get head hunger, I just don't care. I know this will pass and I savor each day of not having to deal with appetite!

I am 7 months post op and I still don't get hungry. I have to eat 4-6 times a day or I get headaches, so I am on a schedule. I just know when it's time for me to eat, but I can and have gone over a day without eating anything just because I was too busy, forgot, or just put up with the headache because no foods sounded good to me. I have learned that it takes a LONG time for those kinds of headaches to go away, so I make sure to stick to my schedule now.

For me, it changed abut the 4th week, after I got back to work and starting being more active again....then I was SUPER HUNGRY!! Grrrr... It's the weirdest thing, after all these years, I finally know what it really means to be hungery... but also, after all these years, I know what it's like to eat 2 crackers and feel like I could burst.! When I went in for my 1 week check up, my doctor told me that my appetite wouldn't return until 3-6 months! At the time I thought that was wonderful. Now, I know what you mean about not really wanting to eat. Who would have ever thought that eating a meal could turn in to such a chore! Certainly not me. I did find that at 4-6 weeks that I did need to eat so I didn't feel exhausted or lightheaded so, like the previous poster said, I started scheduling my meals and eat even if I don't really feel like it. At this point, all I would suggest is to try to keep eating (you need to eat to lose) and enjoy this phase while it lasts. Congrats on your weight loss so far!

Oh, yes, I remember this lovely stage. It lasted well into 6 months for me & then my appetite really came back slowly & gradually. I'd say I was close to a year post by the time it was REALLY back & I would really feel hungry again. I almost NEVER get the real hungries now like I did pre-op. I have found that if I ignore my hunger now, it will largely go away....but, oh boy, do I pay for it later when I try to eat, almost always get sick if I have waited too long. It's much better to eat a small meal when it's time & not wait til I am TOO hungry.
