Question:
Strategies for Girl Scout Cookie Temptations
I am still preop and am working on my 10% weight loss. I'm having A LOT of trouble with Girl Scout cookies. I bought several boxes (mistake 1). They are now coming in. I have been putting them out at work, but still am eating too many. Actually I'm ALMOST sick of them, but now I've really noticed this is a type of addiction. It's impacting my pre-op weight loss efforts now, but I'm worried how I will cope post op. Does anyone have any ideas or advice? — w8free (posted on February 26, 2003)

Pre-op that's a tough one. I used to eat about 10 boxes annually. This
year post op it is a different story. I ate girl scout cookies but I can
now eat one and be totally satisfied and not eat anymore. I also know that
if I eat more than one I will probably dump so I have an insentive. I
don't deny myself anything I just now have a tool that limits me.

My advice is that you not "put them out" at work. If they are
"out" you can get to them. Give them away a whole, unopened box
at a time. Tell people to take them home for their children. Or, stop by
a retirement home and give them an upopened box or two. Get them out of
your life ASAP. You can also give them back to the Girl Scout and she can
donate them. That way, you've done a good deed by supporting the troup,
but you won't have any temptation. The good news is that this is a problem
only for a short time each year. My daughter is a Girl Scout and we will
be picking up the cookies that she sold/bought tonight. We will get them
delivered, donated or eaten ASAP so I don't have to face the temptation.

My daughter is a girl scout and we just ordered some for hubby that I don't
like and I ordered a bunch (for her to get credit for them) and mailed them
off to my other kids. I will bring some to school as well. However, I am
7 weeks postop and have NO desire for those cookies. And I once ate 3
boxes of thin mints in one afternoon (and that is when I was thin!)

I am 10.5 months post op. I bought my husband like 3 boxes of girl scout
cookies. The thing that works best for me is reminding myself they are full
of calories, carbs, sugar, fat...etc, etc. I know if I eat just one I will
feel extremely guilty. One serving is only 4 cookies and its like 170
calories!!! I can't waste what little calories I eat on cookies!!! Good
Luck to you, I know how hard it is!!

Someone told me that they have sugar-free cookies now. Has anyone tried
them? Make your own cookies and store them in the freezer. See my profile
page or my website for sample recipes, photos, and ordering information at

I can totally identify. I am also sad to say that this surgery is on our
stomachs and not on our heads. The good news is that you won't even be
hungry for a long time but if you do not deal with those addictive
behaviors post op those old habits will just sit and wait for you to get
hungry again. I have found that a post op group therapy is great if you can
find one otherwise a therapist one on one might be a good idea. I did not
realize just how much of a problem i had with food (the extra 130 pounds
should have given me a clue I guess!)until after surgery and I really don't
think I could have seen it before anyway. I find that the only way to keep
myself honest and in check is to share my fears and wackiness with other
people in the same boat. I know that people tried to tell me this pre op
and i just could not hear it. I would also run screaming next time I see a
girl scout coming my way! By the way you are so smart and brave to ask this
question because it is an issue that I don't think gets discussed enough. I
wish that I could be one of those people who has surgery and never looks
back and lives happily ever after but I just ain't. Oh well. Best of luck
to you and don't spend this time beating yourself up!!!!! :)

I know the temptation well! I am a new Brownie leader and had 160 cases of
cookies in my dining room for a couple of weeks! Temptation is SO hard to
resist. But for those that would like to support the girl scouts they
love, but not have to deal with the temptation, this year they are doing a
special promotion called "Operation Cookie Drop". You purchase a
box of cookies and they are sent by the girl scouts to our troops over
seas, you never have to face the temptation and the girls get all the
credit. Our council did not learn of the program until after preorders
were in, but I do believe it is a nationwide thing. So buy up and still
live guilt free!

I know where you are coming from about the temptation. I should be getting
my cookies anyday now. I also ordered a few boxes. I am not required to
lose any weight pre-op- Thank God for this. I was so worried that I would
not be able to enjoy one more season of Girl Scout cookies, Turns out I
will. Hang in there and good luck!

If you ordered GS cookies and do not want them around, why not send a care
package to the service people overseas, I have not had weight loss surgery
yet, but I am diabetic and can not eat those cookies, I have a nephew in
the Navy aboard a ship, I sent him a care package. You can always call a
recruiting office, for National Guard, Air Force, Marines or Navy and ask
for some address, you could buy some more cookies and goodies and it is a
tax write off. God Bless America

To sum up everyone else's adivce...JUST GET RID OF THEM! Anyway you can,
you just need to get them away from you. It's tough...and at a year post
op, it was still tough to resist buying a box last week when I had an
opportunity. I have found that as a postie the only way to avoid eating
stuff like that is to avoid having it in my presence as much as possible.
Cookies...whoa, cookies were really my thing. ;) And even now - when I
"cheat" - it's usually on a cookie. So, I hear you girl. Ya
just gotta get rid of 'em. Good Luck!!

I know exactly how you feel! They came around with the order form at work I
felt a little guilty saying no, but I know I have to loose as much as
possible before my surgery. I don't have a date yet, but at my consult the
Dr said I probably have a "fatty liver" and that it will make the
Lap easier if i lose before the surgery (although I'd prefer the open i
wouldn't mind a hernia to help the TT approval i'm going to need
heheheh)Good luck...btw...I agree with the other posters...give them away!
Think of all the calories you won't have to get rid of later. *wink*
