Question:
I am 5 weeks post op md says solids ok, having hard time w/ proteins

I did ok on liquids and purees but was trying more to just get a little in so i wouldn't be so tired and allow for healing. Now, that I have the greenlight, i am a bit gunshy about eating, i have tried a few things and do ok, but others "just don't feel right" then on top of that trying to get in protein, limit carbs, etc. some days it just seems easier to drink a few calories. I have tried some protein shakes, but those get old quick. Maybe I am just missing the way I used to eat, not sure, but its like i have trouble figuring out what to eat that i can eat that fits the parameters. I have tried to make an appt w/ nutrionist, but it will be a while. My md's recommendation is high protein with some carbs in small amounts. Thanks and I am sorry for rambling.    — Leigh S. Leigh, everything you describe sounds about right for five weeks post-op. If you had a RNY, remember that it takes up to six weeks for all the post-op swelling in that area to completely resolve. Even if you're doing all the "right things"....small bites, chewing thoroughly, eating slowly....some foods will be just fine, and others just won't feel right at all. Try focusing on "softer" protein sources right now....cottage cheeses, string cheese, fish/shrimp/scallops, refried beans, tofu, ground beef (moist meatloaf was a winner for me), etc. I was tolerating chicken really well at this point, but lots of people have problems with it at first. My suggestion for chicken is to cook it thoroughly in a crockpot or pressure cooker until it just falls apart, and then have some type of sauce or gravy with it. With any of your meats, it will help if you add some moisture. You will probably get alot of different responses, since all RNY patients seem to tolerate different foods at different stages. Just add things slowly, follow the "rules", and know that just because it doesn't go well right now, doesn't mean "forever". I found that foods that I couldn't tolerate in the first three months were just fine during the next three months. Best wishes!

Yes, I had open RNY, and thanks for the encouragement and advice Diana.

I am 4 weeks postop and on regular food for about a week. Chicken is the food I'm having the most trouble with. But I think its because I'm taking bigger bites and swallowing too much at once. Hamburger meat seems to be the easiest for me to handle. I also found protein bars which are pretty tasty and I usually eat 1/2 a day. Just be sure to eat slowly, small bites and just "try" different foods to see which ones agree with you. Good Luck!
