Question:
My doctor told me that he would like for me to try Wellbutrin SR for a
while because of loss of libido since WLS. I am already taking zoloft and he said they go together. Has anyone feel friskier after taking this combination? Also he said I may lose weight from the Wellbutrin too. True? I mean I am losing just fine but does this make you lose faster? I am relatively happy but just at a loss since I don't eat all the time to "medicate". I am sure most can relate to this problem if you are postop. Thanks for any help or information on this. — Marilyn C. (posted on June 29, 2002)

Yes, they do work together good. I have been taking Zoloft for the past 2
years. I started feeling like I wasn't getting the full benefit of them so
my Dr added Wellbutrin. I have been taking both for a while now and feel
much better. I don't think they have affected my appetite much though. I
am pre-op, surgery date is July 25, but I will probably switch to the
liquid after surgery. I wonder, does Zoloft come in a liquid form also?

Casey, thanks for your response! Yes, zoloft comes in a liquid form but
beware it is soooooooo sweet! I had it and I couldn't take it because it
made me dump. Plus it tasted horrible! The zoloft is so tiny that I have
no problem swallowing it or the Wellbutrin.

Just watch your changes with wellbutrin, it's a good drug, but if you have
any mania as a part of your depression it CAN (not will, just can) agitate
the mania, and make that worse. I'm referring to bi-polar manic
depression, not just when your husband/kids/animals make a mess and you
want to scream *grin*

SR means slow release, meaning it goes through your system slower, and is
supposed to stay in your system longer which as a Bypass patient we all
know nothing stays in there for long so it will not be absorbed properly!
It will NOT stay in your system long enough to be benificial to you.
Please look in to that before taking it. Your psych should have forseen
that with you being a WLS patient. Wellbutrin does have side effects that
are benificial some being weight loss, and increase libidos although some
are negative as well it just depends on your body. Wellbutrin is also used
as an anti depressant and with your zoloft it will act as one. It does go
well with Zoloft just get the regular Wellbutrin though not the extended
release please, there are a few choices with Wellbutrin not just the SR.
Have a blessed day! ~Ang~

I've been taking Wellbutrin SR for a few years. The other antidepressants I
was on really did make me not want sex at all. The Wellbutrin has corrected
that. I didn't realize what someone said about the slow release, guess I
need to talk to my PCP about it. I had gone off it myself, but due to a
particularly stressful situation at home, I went back on it. It really does
help me with depression. And sex too. LOL

I take zoloft. I take 1 1/2 pills/day (150 mg I think) and they are easily
broken in half, which makes them relatively small. I don't take Wellbutrin,
but I do know that you are no longer able to take it once/day after bypass
because it is extended release. You have to take the non-extended release
version three times a day. If you don't mind this, I have heard it works
pretty well.

I've been on Welbutrin SR for several years. My depression has gotten worse
since WLS... now I'm on Welbutrin (NOT SR).
SR will not work for us as post ops.
