Question:
Has anyone been converted from a short to a long limb bypass?
My sister in law had a gastric bypass 18 yrs ago and has since gained most of her weight back. Her pouch and staple lines are intack. Pouch holds 75cc-stoma is big. MD is not willing to redo pouch instead wants to convert to long limb. She is worried about constant diarrhea and nutritional deficiency. She is also concerned that she will continue to have a large appetite. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks! — Sandra I. (posted on April 24, 2002)

You may want to research the Duodenal Switch (BPD/DS). It's quite common
for failed RNYs to revise to a DS. Check out www.duodenalswitch.com. You
can also check www.mywls.com. Both these sites will give valuable info. and
will provide you additional links for further research. I wish you and your
sister-in-law the very best.

I have not had this done, though I did have to revise my pouch (distal
rny). I have hosted several people who have converted from an older rny to
a newer rny without incident (except wt loss). They've been delighted with
their results. They've been done HERE, so we saw their
"pariticulars", such as what it WAS vs what it BECAME, so those
are the only ones I can address.
