Question:
I am 12 wks post open rny and I crave tomatoes. I am eating grape tomatoes
all day long...about 5 at a time. These are those little cherry tomatoes. I can't get enough of them! I also like ketchup and all forms of tomato sauces. Is the acid in tomatoes harmful to the staples in my pouch? Don't want to mess with those staples at all! Do any of you post ops crave tomatoes? — Marilyn C. (posted on January 20, 2002)

I can't give you any information about the possible damage to your stomach
from the acid.
This question made me giggle. I, too, craved tomatoes after my surgery.
Funny thing was, I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole before! Really
strange to eat something that you used to avoid like the plague.
My cravings have subsided, so maybe yours will in time.

I had to chuck myself. I love tomatoes, and after surgery I just couldn't
get enough of them. I ate them so much that my husband said I would turn
into a tomato. As far as being bad for your stomach, medically I have no
idea. In my experience, I ate them by the pound, and had no ill effects.
I am now 8 months post op and down 72 pounds.

I too sat and peeled tomatoes, just a week out from surgery and ate and
relished the taste to no end. I told my surgeon and he smiled and said
that was fine! Something about the vitamins, I think our body is craving!
But mmmmmmm they were good......then I moved to Spinach, right out of the
can, sprinkled with a little vinegar Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. But all good
stuff!

I too had cravings for tomatoes!!! Also my list included mustard (on
crackers was great) and pickles.... I couldn't get enough of that
stuff...but being six months post-op I can tell you those strange cravings
do subside. I never much liked mustard pre-op and I'm back to taking it or
leaving it. -Kim

Thats funny, I too cannot get enough of tomatoes. I love the grape
tomatoes, wonderful flavor. Anything with tomato sauce, I crave. I eat
shrimp everyday for lunch and dip them into cocktail sauce, I lick what is
left over, can't get enough of that flavor. I just made chili with stewed
chunks of tomatoes and I have been picking them out. Another fav. is
banana peppers, ooooh my mouth is watering.

Oh my this is so funny, I thought I was crazy. I too am/was craving
tomatoes, especially like spaghetti sauce or marinara, and just tomatoes
themselves, the Roma and grape are my favorite. I have never dumped from
them and they make me feel better, but I will say this Campbell tomatoe
soup made me dump the first and last time I ever have, i looked on the can
a little late it is loaded with sugar.
Glad to hear someone else has this!!!

I'm laughing because I never liked tomatoes that much before my surgery and
now I can't get enough. Salsa is a big treat for me and extra tomatoes on
everything..This is new for me so it must be somehow related to the
surgery...

Thank God I'm not the only one! I eat some form of a tomato every single
day. I swear, I dream about spaghetti with tomato sauce at night! In fact,
think I'll go fix a bowl now. :)

Me too, early on. During my clear liquid phase I cheated and ate some
strained Prego sauce:(, For awhile I ate tomatoes non stop. This has
decreased lately.

Okay, I just had to put my two cents worth in also!!! I also CRAVED
tomatoes and still ocassionally do (7 1/2 months post op). I figured
because they are high in potassium, it was my bodies way of helping
out....but who really knows....if you find out, let me know...lol

I don't think the acid from the tomatoes will harm you. My surgeon allows
V8 Juice for the first week after surgery when his patients are on full
liquids. While in the hospital all I had was cranberry juice, grape juice,
apple juice or chicken broth. They all tasted terrible. The day I was
discharged he told me I could have ANY liquid except sugared, carbonated
drinks. And he specifically mentioned V8 Juice. We stopped on the way
from the hospital and got some and that and Crystal Lite was almost all I
had for a week. I usually had close to a half gallon of V8 every day. If
the acid were going to hurt anything, I think it would have during that
week.
I am almost 8 weeks post-op and if I'm not feeling well, I still go to my
V8 and almost immediately start to feel better.
I don't have a clue why, but it works!

I too crave tomatoes and anything with a vinegar base, but was not allowed
any of this until I was 12 weeks post-op. Now I can't get enough of them.
