Question:
Is it safe to use laxatives after open RNY?
I have been constipated a little lately and wanted to know if it was okay to use something and if laxatives would have the same effect as they did pre op. Any advice? — Karen Q. (posted on January 16, 2002)

Karen, I'm 2-1/2 months post op lap rny. About every ten days or so I take
two Senokot vegetable laxatives just to get things moving cause I can't
stand not being able to go regularly. I've experienced no problems, just
relief. I don't see the harm. I'm basically pretty regular but every now
and then I need the extra assistance. Best wishes to you.

When I need a little help I take Milk of Magnesia. It is what my surgeon
recommended and works great!

Right out of the hospital I was constipated. When nothing happened after
the weekend I called my surgeon. I was getting really uncomfortable. He
said to take Phillips Milk of Magnesia. It is the mildest laxative and
will not harm your pouch. But to only take a tablespoon at a time with
about 6 ounces of water taken slowly. If that doesn't work in 8 hours do
the same process again. I had no problem after the second dose. Now I
don't wait so long. After 2 days of constipation I take a tablespoon and
it works within 8 hours. Good luck.
