Question:
This is not really a question - but a word of advice. I always thought of popcorn as
a fairly okay snack - no sugar, a natural product, etc. Anyway, I've tried it twice - and my husband once - all to disastrous results! Both times for me and the once for my husband led to terrible, uncontrollable diarrhea the next day. Both times for me, it seemed my digestive tract was stimulated by drinking water and then I HAD TO GO - IMMEDIATELY. Only, I was in my car. I won't go into the gory details - but you can imagine. For my husband, he had a similar situation only it was prompted by eating lunch, not drinking water. I can assure you, neither of us will go near popcorn again! I just thought I'd share this in the hope to help anybody else from this most uncomfortable and embarrassing experience. — Nancy Z. (posted on November 14, 2001)

I eat popcorn every time I go to the movies with no problems at all. I
guess we are all different. I also know so far no problems eating
popcorn-subject to change of course!

I am sorry that you are unable to enjoy this snack. I would not be happy if
I couldn't have this as my snack. I thoroughly enjoy popcorn and can eat it
without problems. Like the previous poster said, we are all different. I
find it interesting that both you and your husband have had the same
problem. Maybe you could try a different brand? Shelley

I guess that this is another one of those cases where we are all different.
I eat popcorn all the time with no problem whatsoever. But nothing has
bothered me yet.

I have absolutely no problem eating popcorn, either. I am 8 months post op
from a VBG and have lost 92lbs. so far. I do notice that I can eat quite a
bit of popcorn at one time, but I have never had any problem with it.

Popcorn, for all that it has no (added) sugar, is a carbohydrate. If you
eat a lot of carbohydrates, you don't have a lot of room for the protein.
So, it may not be such a good choice for us WLSers.
Also, corn can be difficult to digest for some of us. It has something to
do with the stuff that surrounds of the kernel and has a lot to do with
cellulose, which is indigestible. I sometimes had trouble with corn Before
I had surgery, but we are all different, as other posters have said.
Keep smilin', and don't forget to pick the little skin things from between
your teeth! :) Margie B

I had a proximal RNY and haven't had much problem with popcorn, although I
do try to limit it, because of the carbs and fat. Give yourself some time
and try it again. I couldn't tolerate popcorn until about 5 months out
because of the diarrhea.

I had RNY also and popcorn is no problem for me either.

Just another MYTH (I wish I knew who starts these
things) RNY's can and do routinely eat popcorn.. Actually you will find
out that RNY'ers will eat very normal after the first year post-op..
I'm almost 2 years post-op at goal weight and I can eat anything I want in
moderation given my pouch size... ahhhhhhh it's a perfect world... Eat
what you want and have the pouch to control the overeating...

I am 6 months post-op and Ive had popcorn a few times now in the last 3
months with no problem whatsoever! We aren't all alike, some things that
agree with you may not agree with me and vice versa. When trying something
new I always have a very little bit to see how it effects me.

I know what you mean! But, with me, it's farting and not diarrhea.
Foul doesn't even begin to describe it! The funny thing is that way
way back I remember the nutritionist at my support group telling us to
never eat popcorn...she didn't say why...I thought it might clog up the
something. NOW...I know why.......

I've never had any trouble with popcorn, and air-popped without butter or
salt, I think it's a great snack. Yes, it's a carbohydrate, but it's also
good fiber, which can be helpful to those of us that sometimes have
problems "going". I think just like everything else, if
it affects you badly, then add it to your list of "foods to
avoid". Otherwise, in moderation, wonderful.

It's nice of you to warn people about this. I'm one of the lucky ones and
can eat popcorn with no problem. However I'm not really crazy about it so I
don't eat it often. But I can.
