Question:
what is everyones opinion on the Russell Stovers low carb sugar free candy ?

Just for an occasional treat? How bad are they for us? — Kathy S. (posted on March 15, 2004)

I don't think there is anything wrong with it as an occasional treat, just beware that most sugar free candy does cause carb cravings, so I would be wary.

I've had them and they aren't bad. I don't see anything wrong with an occasional treat. I kinda like having a little manitol in me once in awhile for the laxative effect.

As does most everything else that tastes good, more than 1/2 of one makes me dump.

I was never an "Occasional treat" sort of gal before this surgery and have to be very careful with that now too. If you are not at your goal I would be very careful with anything that could trigger cravings or become a bad habit because it tastes so good. I do have an occasional treat now that I am at goal but I mean occasional and never a sugar free version of something that I used to binge on like cakes or pies or cookies. You can eat too much of anything so you must be careful.

I REALLY like them, so I use them in moderation. My husband gave me a small box of them for Valentine's Day. I got myself a RS treat at the holidays so I wouldn't feel so left out - this sort of occasional thing. They can cause you to crave more and can cause a laxative effect, as others mentioned.

They are so good!!! My DH and I hide the peppermint patties from each other. We keep them in the freezer, mmmmmm, nice and cold little treat. BUT, I can only have 2 or I get ill (laxative effect & gas) so the thought of over doing it never crosses my mind. Enjoy! ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 140+

I've tried them occationally. I think they're great. I've had the Pecan Delight, the Peppermint Patty, the Chocolate Mousse, etc. All are wonderful treats to have once in a while. Enjoy!

one or two are ok. just make sure you dont make it a daily thing(maybe every 2 weeks or so). also it sweetner that they use in alot of sugar free chocolates cause you to visit the bathroom alot hahaha even has a warning on the candy.

I stay as far away from sugar-free, low carb treats as possible. They trigger more cravings for me and they are very high in fat, saturated fats, and trans fats. If I want something sweet I have fruit or a little bit of the real thing and it ends my sweet cravings.

For me there isn't an "occasional" treat. If I know they are in the house then I eat them 'til they are all gone. I stick with low fat low sugar yogurt or some fruit for some thing sweet.

My suggestion: watch those sugar alcohols! I had a bad experience with them before I even had my surgery. "Laxative effect" was a mild term for what happened to me. I avoid those sugar-free foods that are high in sugar alcohols for this reason.

not just laxative effect , but for me the most awful smelling gas ever. they also have a lot of empty calories, sugar free low carb is not calorie free. they fire up my sugar cravings too. so I like them but avoid them.

PLEASE never let me even have to LOOK at that stuff again. I got gas that was so painful I thought it might kill me. And smell...the dog wouldn't even stay in the room with me! I didn't want to stay in the room with me! The pain wouldn't go away even after I quit eating the candy. I got in touch with my surgeon. He thought I had an overgrowth of yeast in the section of bowel that was by-passed. He called me in Flagyl, and thank Goodness, I am finally feeling better. I spent 3 days in bed, and 4 not eating except liquids (and gas-x). To add insult to injury, I gained 5 pounds! It dropped back off as I got better, but the entire event was painful and disgusting!

I make my own stuff using natural ingredients (NOT sugar alcohols). If you have a specific recipe in mind, email me and I'll let you know if I have it. I have just about everything! Email me at [email protected] I even have everything in a recipe book that is available by emailing me or visiting www.freewebs.com/recipes-after-rny Good luck!
