Question:
Did anyone crave guacamole??

I have been craving guacamole for about two months now. Once a week, I treat myself to a small portion of guacamole. Within a week, the craving comes back!! Why would I crave such a weird thing??? I read that avacodos are the best source of vitamin E, but they are high in fat and calories. Someone at work said that my body must know what it needs, but I dont want to eat something that will cause my diet to fail. Any advice??    — S A. (posted on September 12, 2003)

I don' t believe a small amount once a week or so is going to ruin your program. I eat guacamole once in a while. I like to make a layered dip, take a square cake pan, layer in 1 can refried beans, top with salsa, then ff sourcream, guacamole, diced tomatoes and lettuce and sprinkle wiht shredded cheese and eat w/ baked tortilla chips. I eat maybe 1/4 c with 5 or 6 chips and I'm done. the family likes it too.

I agree with Willow - a small amount occassionally won't kill you. If you make it yourself, you will know exactly what is in it. I have seen some pretty nasty store-bought stuff. And if you eat it with other, healthy things you won't need so much.

That's funny! I craved all Mexican food for about two months after surgery. I agree with the others that a little bit here and there isn't going to hurt you. Sometimes it's worse to keep fighting a craving than to work it inot a sensible overall plan. One caution, though, from my own experience: the high amount of fat in avacados did make my tummy kind of queasy, so try it in small amounts.

I LOVE it! I just only eat it as a treat now. Just about all my food cravings have come back and now I have to fight off temptation again, so I suggest if it was an addictive food for you before, stay away from it! Good luck:o)

When I was on soft foods, I mashed up an avocado and sprinkled it with onion powder and salt. It was as close to guacamole as I was going to get and it was wonderful. I have to agree with the tiny amount i ate it did not hurt!!

Well, first off the fat in Avocados is good fat, so it should'nt be that big of a worry, just how your body reacts to it is what I would pay attention to. I have not had surgery yet (next month if all goes well), but have been told that avocados & guacamole (fresh made is the best) should be no problem. I asked my dietician, because those are 2 of the things I LOVE the most. She suggested not to get the store bought stuuf, and just make it myself. Fresh avocados, and either adding the onions and stuff or using some chunky salsa like Pace to make it guacamole.

Beverly is right, avocadoes are a great source of nutrition and when you're trying to keep your caloric intake up so you get enough energy every day its a great food. I think some avocado, salmon, peanut butter in modest amounts bring good protein and healthy fats into the post-op diet.
