Question:
At 5 weeks post-op can you have watermelon?

I was able to eat watermelon at about 4 weeks out but was a little afraid
because of the fibrous qualities. For the first few weeks I would chew and
spit but after a while felt more comfortable and was able to swallow. Be
very careful though. I had my very first bout with dumping on watermelon.
It's 98% water so you can eat A LOT of it. Goes right through. Of course
there is a ton of natural sugars in it so you're getting a lot of carbs.
My advice is to measure an exact amount - maybe 2-3 oz at first and
experiment. I never eat more than 4 oz at a time - way too much sugar and I
dump very easily on anything with sugar in it. Good luck.

That is something your healthcare professional should answer (either your
surgeon or someone associated with the surgeon). Every doctor is
different in the after care plans. I couldn't have fresh fruit til I was
six weeks post-op, but had no problems with any that I tried after that
time.

Try a little of it and see how it goes for you. It is perfectly safe for
you to eat if you have been tolerating most foods. Chew it well and eat it
slowly... a cup of watermelon cubes (way too much for you to eat but I want
to make a point) has just 10 grams of carbohydrate... so it is a relatively
low carb fruit and is very low in natural sugar. I love a treat of
watermelon... I am so happy it is coming back into season. When I was a
fairly new post op, one evening I ate too much of it and threw up every bit
of the dark pink mush into my bathroom sink...lol. Just have a couple of
cubes and give it a try. ciao, Suze

2 c ups = 25g sugar. Approach with caution, once you've been cleared by
your surgeon

I had a small amount of watermelon at about 6 weeks then tried it again the
next week and dumped badly. I gained 3 pounds the month I ate it. Eat
with caution if at all.

Ok.. let's get a couple of things right.... 22 grams of sugar carbs from
watermelon (the number that fitday has for watermelon carbs and SOME are
fiber so its not all sugar) is a hell of a lot different than 25 grams of
sugar... so keep that in mind... watermelon. or any fruit for that matter
is not a bad thing in moderation.. eventually, ou should get some carbs
into your diet through veggies, beans, whole grains and fruits in that
order, you should eat some fruit. Watermelon was a real joy for me early
out and still is... just eat a controlled amount and do it slowly and
carefully. ENJOY! And don't let the sugar patrol worry you... yes,
refined sugar is bad for most of us, but watermelon is NOT refined sugar.

Gail, I will be 6 weeks out on Wednesday and I first tried watermelon last
weekend. It was so delicious!! I can't imagine summer without it. I went
shopping today adn bought a whole one, divided it up into small bowls and
plan to munch on it for the week. I just ate 4 good sized chunks and they
went down very well and you cannot believe how YUMMY it tasted!!! Don't
worry so much about the little bit of sugar in it, its not like you're
eating a big slab of chocolate cake ;).

Melon is a good fruit choice - better than most other fruits...watermelon
not being the best choice is still good. Just don't panic if you notice
your BM is red after eating it :>) I LOVE my watermelon - just don't
eat it all the time or skip important proteins to eat it.
