That varies by individual, best answer is to ask your doctor. My doc and nutritionist had me on 83 grams of protien a day at 3 weeks post op - but that was right for me it may be really different for you.

I am 10 weeks post-op. I am trying to get about 60mg per day. At that time my doctor said 40 mg would be good. Your body only can absorb 30mg at a time. I use the Real Meals shakes in place of breakfast alot of the time, so I only use half a packet, since the whole pack is 60mg. It is very hard to get it in everyday, I know. Just do the best you can. Good luck

My surgeon wanted us to shoot for 70-80 grams of protein a day, but he said it was okay if the first couple months I couldn't get there. He knew it was hard to drink and eat alot at first, so even at 3 weeks post-op, if all you can get is 30, don't be mad at yourself. It does take some time to develop a routine and get everything in. He wanted us to concentrate on liquids and hydration the most at first. Goodluck to you!

Amy, at 3 wks post op your only concern should be getting enough water and staying hydrated. You have enough fat for your body to nurish itself for awhile. Once you are about 1 mo to 6 wks out, try for 60g and then more later on, I am 7 1/2 mos out and getting 120+ grams a day. Good Luck

Amy, last part I forgot to answer, big debates on hair loss and cause, I will tell u I haven't had any hair loss yet, I am 7 1/2 mos out and I eat 120g+ of protein per day (my hair did come out a ton on Monday, but, I think it was from my puppy nibbling on it)! Good Luck. Heather (open rny 8-15 305/201/150)
