Question:
What do post-ops about a year out eat for Thanksgiving?
My surgery is scheduled for January 15. If all goes well, I should be 10-1/2 months post op next Thanksgiving. I'm curious what others who are already about that far out ate yesterday. — Beth S. (posted on November 29, 2002)

I am one year post-op today. Yesterday I had turkey, dressing, gravy,
green bean casserole, corn casserole and a tiny bite of cranberry sauce.
For dessert I had a delicious sugar free (almost) pumpking dessert. I ate
pretty much what I wanted from all the options and just ate much smaller
amounts. I stayed away from the sugar-loaded salads and desserts and
skipped the rolls.
It was a great day with wonderful friends and it was so nice not to have
the primary focus on food.

Yeah, what they said. A little of just about everything. And the best
part was that I was the only one not complaining of feeling stuffed!

regular pecan pie.

I made my own sweet potato pie, homemade cranberry sauce (just like Ocean
Spray), a french silk pie with homemade whipped cream and chocolate
shavings, and cranberry relish. Of course this was about 2 hours AFTER
dinner. For dinner I had turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, and sweet
potatoes. See my PROFILE page for some great recipes and a book that is

I am only six months out. But I had a pretty regular Thanksgiving. I had
turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, a little stuffing, and green beans.
Then later on in the evening I had a small piece of coconut cake. I can
eat anything just in smaller amounts. And I eat my meat first and a little
of everything else after.

I am about 4 1/2 months out and had about 2 oz of chicken (we've grown
tired of turkey - it's always too dry no matter how much you baste) and
about 2 oz of mashed sweet potatoes (made from scratch - no syrup or brown
sugar). And I was full.

I'm just short of 7 months post-op. I ate 2 slices of turkey and a little
spoonful each of potatoes/gravy, stuffing, squash, corn and 1/2 a dinner
roll. I couldn't eat it all so I set some aside for later. I also made a
low fat pumpkin cheesecake which was yummy! I admit I ate 2 pieces of that
(several hours apart). ;o)

Well I march to the beat of a different drummer. My family decided to eat
out at a restuarant this year. :( So I was'nt about to pay $10.75 for a
turkey dinner I would'nt be able to eat much of. (Plus I knew it tended not
to be good there anyway). So I got their Hot Meatball sandwich. Their
spagetti sauce is to die for. I also got Onion Rings for the side that goes
with it. AND I treated myself to a REGUlAR Pepsi. I only ate about 1/5 to
1/4th of the sandwich (hardly four or five bites) and about two tiny onion
rings. Instead the drink comes with a free refill so I "stupidly
drank" it and ordered another. I hardly drank any out of the second
one and felt really sick and in pain. I should have stuck with water then I
would'nt have felt the need to drink. Oh well we don't get out of this life
without making some mistakes. lol. Anyway, I tried one TINY bite of turkey
and 1/2 spoon of dressing. I was so glad I got my Hot Meatball sandwich!
lol I've had my meatball sandwich there, AND made three more meals out of
it home. (FOUR MEALS FROM ONE!) Last year I did eat turkey, dressing,
mashed with gravy with no problems though.

I had open RNY on 1/11/02, so I'm almost exactly 10-1/2 months out. I ate
everything I wanted: 1 small slice of prime rib, a couple forkfuls of
mashed potatoes with butter, a couple forkfuls of squash, some fruit salad.
I don't dump, so I had a tiny sliver of pecan pie too. Since it was
Thanksgiving, I didn't worry about what I ate, but I didn't have any
trouble stopping when I felt full.

Well I had a small amount of turkey, one spoonful of mashed potatoes, green
beans, 1/2 spoonful of corn, and fresh fruit. And a piece of sugar free
pumpking pie. I stayed away from the stuffing and rolls. I will admit I
took the one extra bite, and had to get up from the table and walk around
for a while. When this happens I always get very clammy. I would have to
also say that the trip to the bathroom this morning, was very smellie
(lol). The best part of all was I lost a pound from Thur. morn. to Friday
morning. Not to bad at all...

I'm about 20 months post-op. Yesterday, I had a small portion of turkey
(approx. 3-4 oz.), 1/2 c. mashed potatoes, some green beans, and a few
bites of a roll. Everything everybody else had, but a heck of a lot LESS
of it!! LOL I was just as stuffed as everybody else, though. They were
amazed I didn't need to go back for seconds or thirds to feel that lovely
"after Thanksgiving" tiredness.

I am 9 1/2 months post-op and yesterday I had a slice of turkey, large
spoonful of mashed pot with gravy, 1 large spoonful of stuffing, and a few
bites of green bean casserole. A few hours later, i had a small sliver of
carrot cake with coffee. I took great pleasure in looking around the table
at those piling their plates high and then going back for seconds! I
marvel at how much non posties eat now(hey, that WAS me..) Happy turkey
day to all!

I ate about 1 oz of turkey, a spoonful of cranberry sauce, 1 roll, about a
TBS of green beans, and a tiny bit of dressing. I had a very very small
sliver of pumpkin pie later. Yesterday my sister and I (she is 18 mos out
and I am 1 yr out) went to Applebee's after shopping all day. We were
really hungry and ate what we wanted until full. After we finished we
compared and it was amazing! We had basically ate the same exact amount.
We both had 5 shrimp, 1/3 cup of steamed veggies, 1/4 cup of mashed
potatoes, and 1/2 piece of garlic toast. We both had a few sips of SF iced
tea. And were perfectly satisfied. This surgery is fantastic!

I had 2 slices of turkey, a couple of spoonfuls of mashed potatos and 4
bites of pumpkin pie. That filled me up!! I had my surgery 11/5/01 and
this year was MUCH different then last year when I couldn't (and didn't)
eat a thing!!
