Question:
Having TT in 2 weeks and told to stop vitamins now...

Should I really stop all my vits 2 weeks before surgery as I was told they are so important for us to take?? My general surgeon says take them, the plastic surgeon's handout reads to stop them 2 weeks before surgery. What would you do?    — Jeannie4 (posted on August 22, 2004)

I would do what your plastic surgeon saids. Stopping your vitiams for 2 weeks will not hurt you; Your plastic surgeons has 'his' reasons, and to avoid any complications should do what he wants... ask how long to wait after TT to restart.

Usually the biggest concern is e. And my PS told me to bump up the iron before surgery.

Personally I would ask why. Maybe it's just certain vitamins and you could eliminate just those. My PS never said anything about it and he knew what I was taking. All I had to do was take extra iron for 2 weeks before and after surgery.

I just had my tt 2 weeks ago. I was told to stop all vitamins and supplements, except my multi, calcium, and vit. c. I was told to stop because some supplements and vitamins thin your blood and could also have a reaction with the anestisa (spelling). I followed doctor's orders and I am very happy with the end result so far. Even with being very swollen I would take my new tummy as is. Good luck with your surgery.

My surgeon had me stop taking E about a week before my plastic surgery, but told me to be sure to take 2 multis a day, and to increase C both before and for a few weeks after surgery. He also gave me a long list of medications to avoid pre-surgery (most of them over-the-counter ones that thin the blood). You might double-check with the surgeon for specifics, but I agree that two weeks off of vitamins is unlikely to cause any problems if that's what your surgeon wants you to do.

I too, was told to stop E before my gall bladder and PS. My WLS DR. did my gall bladder and he was the one whon said the others were fine. Go by what your current surgeon says. A week or 2 won't harm you. Good luck!!

I would follow your plastic surgeon's instructions. Many multivitamins have some herbal things or other additives that can affect blood clotting, so it it probably just easier and safer to say stop taking vitamins for two weeks before surgery.

As a nurse in a surgery center we tell patients to stop Vit E, ginko biloba, garlic, all Asprin products (which thins the blood. A multi-vit with E in is different, we don't stop the vitamins. I would ask "WHY"? and perhaps they are just not being specific.
