Question:
Any expirience with the Atkins Low Carb Icecream?
Hi folks, yet another low carb question. Are you low carbers eating these new products such as ice cream, rolls, noodles etc. They claim to have low impact carbs. Are you eating them on a regular basis and loosing/maintaining (wherever you're at in the process) successfully? I did Atkins yrs before these goodies and they seem to be a dream come true...or are they too good to be true? Also, I found myself eating 4 of the bars yesterday? Right around 10 "impact" carbs total...but, still exessive? (Fat girl in me says, but it's only 10 carbs, but the girl wanting to get skinny is saying, that's just fat girl talk...lol). Any and all advice on this is greatly appreciated. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 282/135ish/125ish. — KimBo36 (posted on June 11, 2003)

Kimberly- I have tried most of the Atkins and other low-carb products.
The brownies and fudgebars (like a Fudgcicle) prompted a lot of the old
cravings (they were just way too tasty) so I now religiously avoid them. I
eat at least one protein bar a day and will have the low-carb flatbread
crackers with cheese at least 5 days a week for lunch and have had pretty
consistent weight loss (223#'s in 8 mos).
My big concern is just like yours . . . even though I may not be consuming
too many impact carbs, I still worry that I may be over-eating and that I
won't condition my body (and my brain) to deal with not chomping to satisfy
a myriad of emotional and psychological issues. As a result, I sip a lot
of coffee and water throughout the day and, at 8 mos. out, chew gum.
Good luck--- I'm looking forward to seeing what others think about this
issue as I could definitely use some fresh perspective.

I haven't tried the Atkins, but have tried the Healthy Choice fudgesickles.
Although I'm a year out from surgery and haven't dumped on anything else
(including the occasional piece of pie or cookie), I dumped on two of
those! At least I *think* it was dumping, I get extremely sleepy. This
product had malitol or some other sugar alcohol, and I wonder if I'm more
sensitive to those.
Beyond all that, though, I have the same concerns stated by the previous
poster. Yesterday I found myself in the frozen food aisle of the grocery
store looking at the ingredients on all the low-sugar or dietetic ice cream
products, but finally decided not to buy any of them. I think, for me at
this moment, it's a slippery slope. I've already seen that with these
fudge bars: bought them for my family, ignored them for a week or so, then
had one, then had two on two different occasions. That sort of suff was
definitely a pre-op binge food for me, and I think I'm better off not
buying them at all. For the moment, I think I'll stick to having sweets
only rarely, and always out of my house. I hope I can stick to that!
The other issue, of course, is that while there may be some debate about
"impact" carbs and their effect on immediate blood sugar, I think
we still should count all the calories stated on the label. I know some
people do deduct fiber (figuring it's non-digestible) and things like
glycerine or sugar alcohol, and these are the games Atkins play, but I'm
skeptical.
