Question:
What is the verdict on non-impact carbs?

I just started (again) back on lower carb eating to control these insane cravings I've been having...two days counting, so far so good. I just want to know how you all feel about the new products that list carbs then the non impact carbs. Are your expiriences with only counting the "impact" carbs pretty good? I had a few of the Atkins/Keto bars yesterday...how many of those suckers is overboard? I did have those along with regular low carb meals..so it wasn't the only thing I ate. Also, I'm wondering what you longer term posties try to keep your carb count at. I know I won't be able to do the 20-30 g like the Atkins program. My primary goals are to loose the five I've gained, plus an additional 10 lbs and to maintain my blood sugar levels since I've developed hypoglycemia as a result of surgery. Is 40-50g out of the question? I did right around 40 g yesterday and the cravings have subsided considerably (I've been on a sweets food frenzy for over a month now until yesterday). I'm just wondering if I can continue with that range and possibly loose the last bit of weight. Should I also count calories and fat intake? If so, what kind of limitations are we talking about? I don't need to loose this weight like yesterday, but the next six months would be nice. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also I was wondering if there as a non Adkins type website available for basic low carb q&a. Thanks folks! -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 282/135ish/125ish    — KimBo36 (posted on June 8, 2003)

Kim- I am only 8 mos. out but have been blessed by rapid and fairly constant weight loss (down 221 pounds so far). For the most part, I only look at the "impact" carbs and try to maintain about 40 grams of carbs (or so a day). However, I did have some of the Atkins brownies--- although low in impact carbs, they fueled my cravings for sweets-- seems that my mind thought that they were just a little too good. I have been sticking to carb counting b/c it's relatively easy for me. However, friends who have been on The Zone Diet (which is basically a low carb type of program) have raved about it b/c it encourages a healthy diet). Good luck in your search.

I do a modified version of Atkins. I never count the carbs from good green veggies (broccoli, leaf lettuce, cabbage, etc.) but do count the starchy carbs and keep those under 25 a day (USUALLY). I find that when starchy carbs exceed that magic number for ME then I stop losing. You have to find your magic number. Good luck!

Kimberly, can't answer your question but nice to know the cravings are subsiding-guess I need to follow your example as I get the cravings too much! Have you tried the OSSG-Graduates group with the same question? If not, do so, as I am sure there are lots of posties there who can "relate" and may have the answers your looking for.
