Question:
Are cashews bad for us??
I love planters cashews. Are they bad for us?? I know they have a lot of fat but they have a lot of protein too. Thanks in advance... — Sharon1964 (posted on January 15, 2003)

I eat them and they haven't bothered me. Chew well.

I am nuts about nuts but am avoiding them these days. I think they have
hindered my weight loss because they are so calorific. Plust I find I can
eat 3-4 Xs a serving size without any problem, and that depresses me.
However, if you can control 'em, I say go for it!

Sharon, they have too much fat in my opinion and too high in calories for
so few grams of protein....They give me a severe tummy ache! Tread lightly

I go for one of the 1.75 oz bags of sunflower seeds (in the shells). It
takes me a couple of hours to get through them all, keeps my hands busy and
is only 160 calories...JR

I go thru a cashew phase every few months. I do find that they add a
significant chunk to my daily calories because of the fat. BUT I try to use
them strategically. If I feel the urge to graze or (horrors! =0) actually
find myself in grazing mode, a handful of nuts will not only nip that in
the bud but keep me feeling full for hours. I do have to watch them and if
they become a "trigger" food I get rid of them for a while. (I
consider my trigger foods to be those that I continue to eat after I am
already full. So far they seem to be some nuts, chinese food, and vanilla
wafers.)

Sharon,
Like the rest of the posts here, they're good just for a snack, how-ever
they do become addictive, you'll see you'll be able to eat ore after a
while... They're high in calories and fat.... If you're truley going after
the protein you'd be better off with tuna fish/oysters or even sardines on
crackers....
If you're just going for the "Crunch" try pop corn...
Once addicted it's hard to kick the peanut habit, I know I've been
there.....

They are like any other nut, good protein, yet high in calories. Early
post-op when calories are not an issue, having a handful or two is a good
way to get in protein for a healthy snack. Further post-op for those who
must now watch calories, they are still a good snack but high in calories.
Don't worry so much about fat-with the RNY we do not absorb all the fat we
take in.

I AM SORRY TO DISAGREE WITH ALL OF YOU AGAIN, BUT, why do you all think
that cashews are HIGH in protein? According to Fitday.com, 1cup of cashews
= 748 calories, 62.27g of fat (12g saturated fat), 37.08 g of carbs, 5 g of
fiber and 20g of protein....That is ridicouls, you could eat 2 1/2 4 oz
burgers or chicken breasts (no bun) and get the same calories, NO CARBS and
3X the protein...Sorry to vent, but, listen to yourselves, COME ON :0)

The one thing about nuts, and not just cashews, is that they also contain
some beneficial fats in them that our bodies need. Eating cashews for
protein alone, is probably not the best thing to do, but I don't think
eating them, in moderation, is really all that bad for us. There are much
worse things that could be eaten.

I certainly agree with Heather Cross. Nuts, especially cashews, are
extremely high in fat. Stay away from them!!!

Interesting side note, when My father in law had a heart attack, his
cardiologist put him on a diet to lose about 50 pounds , lower jhis
cholesterol etc. also told him to eat nuts (a normal portion is one
handful) at least 3-4 times a week. he lost the weight ( & more
importantly kept it off) and lowered his cholesterol and is doing
wonderful over 2 years later. apparently if you are going to consume fat,
and everybody needs a little , nuts are a good way to go, Isn't it all
about balance and moderation?

Well not to get rude or yell at anybody but....NUTS ARE A GOOD SNACK
FOOD!!!. I personally since my surgery have found myself at times craving
salty stuff and believe me nuts are a far far better choice then o say
potato chips or something like that. Are nots the best Food choice
...probably not but they are a BETTER food choice then some and as long as
they do not become a habit and are used in moderation i dont see any reason
that you shouldnt eat them if you want. O and i dotn know about the others
out there but if i tried to eat a whole cup of nuts i would exsplode lol.
On the occasions that i do eat them it is usually around 1/8 to 1/4 cup
depending on the nut...and that significantly reduces the numbers listed
below and i stay full forever when i do eat them and they satisfy the salt
craving and prevent me from grazing looking for somehting to fill it. so i
say eat them if you want as long as you are aware of what they have int hem
and us them in moderation. I must be doing something right i am 4 months
out as of today and down 82 pounds.

I think nuts can be good or bad. Of course if you sit there and consume a
whole can of cashews, well yes you just ruined the good part of the snack.
Nuts are tricky because of the fat content, just like peanut butter. That
said, my nutionist suggests eating a handful of nuts for protein and she
stressed HANDFUL, not bagful! So, they can be good to incorporate into your
diet as long as you don't overdue it. I love cashews too but I think I am
going to go for the sunflower seeds, a little more work to get at them,
meaning it'll take me longer to get that many in my mouth, and they aren't
greasy like the planters cashews tend to be.
