Question:
True low carbing...what about those impact/non impact carbs?

I'm doing low carbs over the holidays, to counter the cookie attack out there this time of year. It's been a while since I really jumped into a low carb diet and I picked up a few of the Advantage Bars by Atkins. Whats up with the 22 g carb count on wrapper, but the disclaimer telling me to only count 2g carbs. I understand that Atkins wants me to subtract fiber and glygerine and a few other things. But, do you folks who follow low carb on a regular basis find this to be accurate? It makes me a little leary. I usually follow a low calorie diet and it works fine for me. I just like to do low carb once inwhile to jump start things when they get really slow. I realize that the calorie count is way up when I do low carbs, so I get leary when I see something with 220 calories list 22 g as carb. I feel like I'm ruining either dietary approach by eating it. Please give me your opinions on these products. Thanks. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 -145lbs    — KimBo36 (posted on December 29, 2002)

I personally never could stand any of those protein bars, I have tried them all, when i go on my no carb weeks I mainly eat imitation carb, cheese, fish and some jerky, but that last one is pretty salty, going no carb really works for me every so often, I am not trying to lose anymore weight,I currently weigh 112 pounds, that's down from 270 poundsI just had my tummy tuck with muscle repair and a breast reduction done on December 2nd. but going no carb for a week every so often keeps me lean and tight...

My doc says gastric bypass patients needn't worry about the fiber and sugar alcohol counts on those carb lables and says the Atkins lables are accurate. I find them confusing too, and so did the Food and Drug Administration because they are changing the lables. Another tip, just because it says 0 carbs doesn't mean 0 carbs. There could be .99 carbs in there.... it gets frustrating, but I'm down 40 pounds in 6 weeks on a low-carb post-op diet, so I can't complain. --Jen, lap RNY 11/12/02
