Question:
I just ate a chocolate covered macadamia nut--nothing happened!
I'm only 10 days postop lap rny. Is that strange? I guess I was just 'testing' -- no lectures, please. — Kimberley E. (posted on December 20, 2002)

If you are wondering about dumping from sugar. You probably didn't get
enough from just one. You will discover the limit the very first time you
cross it. It is different for everyone, and you will have to learn yours. I
drank a drink with 55 grams of sugar and had no effect on me. I did it
befor I noticed it, and I am glad it didn't affect me. I am only 6 weeks
out and haven't dumped on anything yet but I don't eat much sugar.

I'm not going to lecture you, but a 10-day old pouch is not ready for stuff
like nuts (would you feed a 10-day old baby nuts???). As far as the sugar
goes, from what my nutritionist says, 30% of RNY posties do not dump on
sugar. This may be one of the possibilities. The other is as Donny said
- you didn't eat enough sugar for *you* to dump...JR

Awhile ago a new WLS post op here ate beef jerky at a week and ended up
with a ruptured pouch, and had to get emergency surgery. Seriously if your
going to cheat, then cheat responsibly. Want chocolate? Please no nuts...
Have a regular hershey bar. Soft foods like cottage cheese, cream soups,
etc. No scoulding were concerned with your safety.

Are you Nuts! Why would you want to cheat 10 days out? No lecture, just a
big, Why?!!

No lecture here, just remember that now you have a new "tool" in
you body. Please respect it, in a few months you may experiment with food
like that. We don't want you to go back to the hospital.

Remember this is the time to change those eating habits of past years. I
know, I love chocolate too--but try to stay away from it. Old habits are
hard to break. Now 4 months out, I find myself fighting every day to not
go back to my old habits of eating what is not good for me. Good luck.

In the beginning it took at least 15 grams of sugar for me to dump. But I
have to agree, nuts are not the best thing on a new tummy. Although, I
have to admit, I ate sugar free chocolate covered peanuts at a month post
op. So I'm not one to lecture.

Kimberly, the day I was released from the hospital, my surgeon told me to
go home and try whatever I wanted. No restrictions. He said you will know
what you can tolerate and what you can't. If you can't tolerate something
early on then try it again a month or so later. I am 6wks post op and have
not dumped, vomited or anything. I have been fortunate in some ways. Of
course, by my choice, I am staying completely away from sugar because that
is what got me here in the first place. I do NOT want to find out that I
can eat it with no consequences. In many ways, seems like we are on
another diet, doesn't it?

hi there :) no lectures from me as i know that no one is perfect! i dont
think 1 choclate cover nut is going to kill anyone and i wouldnt concider
it cheating either, i dont think anyone had this surgery to be on a diet
again, just remember healthy choices and good habits. i personally have not
pushed the sugar envelope at all becuase if i dont dump, ill probably give
in and eat it. i had one hersheys kiss back in may and that was it. if im
ever having a sweet craving which thankfully isnt often, i have a sugar
free pecan cluster or something like that, they are by russel stover and
honestly i cannot tell the difference. i dont do this alot as they still
have calories in them but the hit the spot if the sweet tooth kicks in.i
didt try any nuts at 10 days out but if you tried it and as long as you
chewed well and didnt get ill , i think your ok. best of luck to you! :)

nothing made me dump for the first 3 weeks after my RNY. i actually tried
to make myself dump, too, because i had this unbearable head hunger and i
thought if i could just make myself sick off something, then maybe i would
never want it. the weirdest thing happened at my 3-week mark, it was like
a switch was flipped and suddenly my brain and body were in synch with
where i should be. i also got myself some sugar-free candies and
chocolates to nibble on, but even my cravings for those have become nearly
non-existent lately. i never thought i would say that! it was really hard
there for a while! just be careful to your tummy/ if something's not good
for you, your body will let you know.
cheers.
