Question:
I am 3 months post-op and I can eat 2 tacos from taco bell

and I wasn't really that full. I usually eat about 1,000-1,00 calories a day. I lost 21 pounds before surgery and have lost 51 since surgery on Dec.3rd. I feel it is a little slow. What do you think?    — Melissa D. (posted on March 12, 2002)

Everyone is different, but that does seem like a bit much for three months out. I remember, at three months out, I took a road trip across the U.S. We ate mostly at fast food restaurants for an entire week. I remember, at that time, I could eat 1/2 of a regular McDonald's hamburger or 2-3 bites of a soft taco. Some people can eat more and some can eat less, but I am 1 year out and still can't eat two tacos in one sitting!

My rny was on 12/10 so we are on about the same timeline. I have had Taco Bell tacos maybe twice. I wasn't able to eat a whole one either time. Sometimes I can eat more than at other times so its possible I could finish a whole one, but I don't believe I could possibly eat two. If you've noticed an overall increased capacity for food, you might want to get checked. Especially if you had a non transected rny. If you have a staple line disruption, you'll want to know. I hope it was just a fluke. Good luck to you.

I'm going to be real honest here - I guess I don't understand why we'd (patients of WLS) go to all the major trouble of having this surgery - the pain from recovery - the major life change that we've got to vow to only to be 3-months out and snacking on the same foods that got us here to begin with. If the weight loss is slow, I would assume it's from not following a diet plan and a way of life change that is in order to get to the goal. I am frankly surprised, and not just by your posting so please do not take this personally, how many people talk about all the fatty things they are eating shortly after surgery. To me, I keep wondering if it's all going to be worth it or not if I'm just going to go back to eating the same cruddy foods that got me here to begin with. Life changes in every direction, I hear...I'd love to hear from some of the people who have reached their goals in somewhat of a faster pace than others ~ how often did you cheat? How far did you push it? How early after your sugery did you push it? Just Curious ~

There are lots of reasons why you were able to eat that much. I am almost 7 months post op and just ate a soft taco supreme and a pintos and cheese in 1 sitting and was amazed. I know the week before and sometimes during my period, I can eat significantly more than other times of the month. How slow did you eat? Were they hard or soft shell? Sour cream? Taco sauce? The softer and more liquidier (is that even a word) the food, the more you can eat. So long as you aren't eating at Taco Bell everyday, I don't see a problem with it. We live in America, avoiding fast food is nearly impossible. And you were probably just using it as an example of your portion size. I only say that because I was cussed out on another website for asking if eating a meximelt was too much (it was a while ago). If you are really concerned and have been able to eat a lot more recently, I would call your surgeon. He (or she) is the best one to ask. Best of Luck!!

Melissa, first up..don't beat yourself up over this. I'm sure you don't do this everyday, its obvious, or you wouldn't be so surprised that you could do this at 3 months out. I too was surprised that I could eat a whole taco at 3 months with the pinto beans with cheese!! And soft tacos will fill you up much faster than the hard taco. The soft taco becomes gummy and the hard crunches down to almost nothing. I can't eat a whole soft taco, maybe close, but it would fill me up much quicker than the hard taco. I am 4 1/2 months out and I have had tacos 3 times. Is that a crime? No, I am living like a normal person. And as far as your weight loss, I think it is super AND you are a lightweight to boot. I am also a LW and at 3 mo. I had lost 50 lbs. and did everything right!! I have a friend that went from 300 lbs. to 135 in 8 months, and she ate ALL THE TIME, and not your best choices. I, on the other hand, have been really good, and have lost a lot slower than her. My philosophy is everything in moderation!! Thats the key. Good luck with continued success!!

I to would eat a taco bell taco after surgery and know why I could eat the whole taco. There is not much meat in it, if you want to call the brown stuff meat. Not much cheese or tomatoes lol and the shell chews down into dust. What I now realize though is I don't want a taco bell taco after seeing the calories and fat in what I was eating. One taco bell taco has 180 calories, 10 grams fat, 9 proteins, 12 carbs and 330 sodium content. I can eat something that will keep me fuller for longer period of time for less fat and calories. As I have posted to other questions presented here today I was not losing weight and it is because I did not know what I was putting into my body. Yes, I want to eat like a normal person, but being a diebetic for 10 years (now it is gone, no more shots because of the surgery) my metobolize does NOT work like a normal person otherwise I would not have been MO and would not have needed this surgery. Yes, I want to lose the weight, but mostly I want to be healthy and live longer with more quality of life. My surgery is a tool not an excuse to eat whatever I want whenever I wanted and that was what I was doing. Reduced intake is good, but not the total answer. I have had to do a lot of rethinking the last few days and I don't mind counting calories or fat grams, because now I can run, walk, and breath like a NORMAL person and I dont have to stick needles into my fat tummy anymore. We need to look within ourselves and remember why we had the surgery and keep supporting each other. I know I needed a awakening to get back on tract to healthier eating and my month and half platuea was that awakening.

I can eat a pintos-n-cheese, and the inside of a taco. I do this maybe once a week. The other day I tried a Chicken taco supreme, and almost puked because of the Sour cream. Needless to say no more sour cream for me. When I eat things like that, that I know are not the best choice(just the easiest choice) I usually drink water with it to flush it through my system quicker. Yes I realize this maybe cheating my body of much needed nutrition, and calories. which I know I am not getting enough of anyway, but it helps me to mentally justify it. Since I only do this once a week I do not think it is a problem. I recently was able to eat Whole grain Wheat toast, so I made a sandwich with low fat mayo, cheese, and deli meat. I did not eat the crust, and could only eat almost 3/4 of the sandwich before I got too full. I am at 3 months out, and have lost almost 75 pounds. I cannot eat much at one sitting, but have heard that women can eat, or crave more at a certain time of the month. I have heard that women lose slower than men, so I would think that you are right in line with were you should be. I started at 400 pounds, so that is probably why I am losing faster then you also. Try not to compare yourself to anyone. Your body is your own, and it will lose as fast as it wants to. Just go with the flow. eat a well balanced Diet according to the USDA food pyramid starting with Protein first for every meal, and you should be fine.
