Question:
Being 9 days post-op, what healthy foods full of protein are good for me?

I am on puree for two months. I am trying to figure out what foods are good for me at this stage, that are loaded with protein. I tried pureeing some fish and eating it, but it didn't go down very well. How about chili? Any ideas to last me 2 months would be extremely helpful. I know I post many questions, I just feel this is the best place to ask them right now. Thank you everyone for answering my questions.    — Laurie L. (posted on November 17, 2001)

Hi Laurie - first, lots of luck on your journey - may it be rewarding and excititng! The easiest way for me to get protein shortly after surgery was in soup. I would cook vegetables and slices of turkey or pieces of chicken in water till they were soft. I would add whatever seasonings I thought would be good and when everything was cooked through, I would take out all the solids and pur them in the processor till they were mush, then put them back in the broth. What I got was a delicious and satisfying and nourishing meal loaded with protein. I would do the same thing with salmon which my nutritionist told me he wanted me to eat every day. Also, my nutritionist told me to eat 2 whole soft boiled eggs every day. He said eggs are an incredible source of protein. He specifically said I was to put salt in the eggs. You can do it! Hope this was helpful, Nancy.

On pureed - I never did the blender thing - but cottage cheese, yougurt, fat free or lowfat refried beans with a little melted cheese and lowfat sour cream - give yourself time, you will find more high protein choices......oh eggs, I was able to have on pureed, but try a little first and make sure they sit well :)

I am only 10 days post op, but my surgeon discourages puree. I was givena list of protein foods that I shuld introduce one at a time. They are: Cottage cheese lowfaat or nonfat; yogurt lowfat nonfat plain artificially sweetened; string cheese; eggs any style; tofu; refried beans; lentil split pea black bean soups; miso or egg drop soup; chicken; turkey; fish; small amounts of cooking spray and small amounts of nonfat mayo or salad dressing to moisten foods. Nothing BBQ or fried. So far, I've only had scrambled egg in addition to broth/jello. Good luck.

I had a hard time with protein in the early months. My doc said it was normal and eventually you will be able to get more protein in. I used a protein drink for many months until I could tolerate other protein rich foods.

I had a very hard time with protein in the beginning because I have become lactose intolerant and I could not eat eggs. Egg whites are a great source of protein as well as chili. Wendy's chili saved my life when I was a newbie. Even if you have to puree it tastes great, low fat, and lots of proteing. Also I recommend you buy some lentil chili at the market. It tastes great and it is healthy!!! Good luck! Beth
