Question:
Does anyone else dump on Turbinado Sugar?
I heard so much about baking with Turbinado Sugar before the holidays, that I went out and found some. I tried making an apple pie using just 2/3 cup for a 9 inch pie. Apples and applesauce don't bother me, but a 2 in. slice of pie made me queasy, shakey, dizzy and feel just awful. I thought we could tolerate this kind of sweetener. It got the box down and read it more closely. It says it's natural sugar from sugar cane. Well, the Dixie Crystals granulated white sugar says pretty much the same thing. What's the deal??? — Teri D. Turbinado is SUGAR - it should make you dump! It's just proccessed less,
so it's a different color, but it's still SUGAR!!! Again, it is not your
typical "sweetener" or sugar substitute, it is SUGAR!

IT IS SUGAR!! Most people who dump sugar dump the Turbinado as well. I
think this is becomming one of those WLS folktales....sugar is sugar. This
is not a sugar substitute by any means...sorry you dumped!

A couple of days ago I wanted a peanut butter cookie so bad so I set out to
find the best way to make one using things we can have. I searched this
website and found a lady that has recipes and she claimed that Turbinado
sugar wouldn't harm us........WRONG!!!!!! I am 6 months out and have been
so careful not to eat anything that would make me dump(I hate pain...lol).
I only ate a small cookie and boy did I feel terrible. I guess I learned a
valuable lesson from this. USE MY HEAD.....IF IS SAYS SUGAR THEN IT'S
SUGAR. And I also learned never to rely on everything that everyone else
says here because everyone is different, What might make me dump may not
make someone else dump. From now on I will be calling my nutritionist to
ask about those things. So everyone should beware of the recipes that
float around this site. They may not be such a good idea for some people.
Please don't get me wrong....I'm not bashing this site....for goodness sake
I live here...lol.

Turbinado Is 100% sugar. It just hasn't been bleached white and refined.
it is not a sugar substitute. You may be able to tolerate fructose (fruit
sugar), splenda, sugar twin, etc. Some people can tolerate the turbinado.
Everyone is different. We learn with every bite.

I don't know where the rumor got started that we could tolerate Turbinado
better than white sugar. It is the same sugar, just has the natural flavor
still in it. I know there is a lady selling a cookbook that shows up on
here every once in a while. I do use Turbinado in my coffee because I like
the flavor but only one cube (4 g) for 12 oz of coffee/milk. If you dump
(which it sounds like you did) it will make you sick. If you don't then you
might as well use the white sugar unless you really like the flavor enough
to pay extra.<p>I have had pretty good success using granulated
fructose (fruit sugar) in baking. You can get it at health food stores. I
still try to cut down on the amounts (like I limit to recipes that call for
1/2 to 3/4 cup sugar to 2 or more cups of other ingredients). I made a
really good pumpkin pie for Christmas with fructose and my daughter loved
it.

Sugar is sugar, one of the worst dumping episodes I have ever had was from
1/2 of a 'sugar free' cookie that was made with fruit juice concentrate.
Your body does not care what the molecule tastes like, only what it's
chemical composition is. I have had excellent results baking with Splenda,
you might try a bit of it. Good Luck!
