Question:
What is the shortest amount of time a surgeon has left in a g-tube?

I am One week post -op and am doing phenominally well. I have never had cause to use my g-tube yet it causes me much pain and irritation. I have to see my surgeon on Friday and was wondering if I should ask him to take it out and what my chances are that he would do it.    — Shannon H. (posted on August 27, 2002)

I am not quite sure why some surgeons continue to place G-Tubes during RNY operations but I can tell you that I had my open RNY on 6/18/02 and BTC never put a G-Tube or NG Tube in, Just a little bulb drain next to the lower part of the incision which was removed prior to discharge on the 4th day postop. This is BTC's standard procedure for ALL procedures. The only time people get a G-Tube placed is if there is major complications and a lengthy hospital stay is required. This allows nutritional needs to be met. Good Luck

I'm pre-op, but in our education meeting we were told our Doc doesn't use the NG tube or G tube any more either. Hope this helps.

I had open RNY on 7-3-02. Had my G-tube in for one month. I was told that I was a high risk for a leak. And that the G-tube was in for precauction. It was the only way that they could give you nutriention if one would need it. Other wise the only other option would be to go back in for surgery to repair the leak. I was very uncomfortable with it in also. But it sure beats going back in for more surgery if it was removed to early. Now I'm glad it out. 2 months and 50lbs down. Good luck to you!!
