Question:
A substitiute for Powdered Sugar & and/or butter?
My birthday is coming up next month. I'm hoping to find a good low fat chocolate cake recipe (I'll sub Splenda for any sugar). I tried a low fat cake recipe once that had apple sause and it was hidious. I'd rather eat regular that eat anything so bad as that again. However I've never cared for frosting unless it's made from powdered sugar (PS tastes less sweet to me which is why I like it). I also like the butter that is mixed with the powdered sugar! Is there a reasonalby good substitute for powdered sugar? As long as I'm asking, what about for the butter/margerine or Buttered Flavored Crisco? "I've made alot of positive changes that I feel I can mantain life long without feeling deprived". However I would like to enjoy a sliver a cake for my birthday too. If I can't sub anything, I'll just eat a sliver of regular cake as I did that less than a week ago without problems. But I would rather use substitutes if I can find them and if they don't taste to bad. Thanks. — Danmark (posted on October 30, 2001)

Mrs. Bateman's Powdered SugarLike is the closest I found..I think Michelle
Curran may also sells the sugarlike products check with her at
www.vitalady.com Mrs Bateman's also has brown sugar sugarlike But I use
sugar twin in all my baking.. Also on the applesauce substitute for
oil.. You have to split that.. like if it calls FOR 1/4 CUP use 1/8 OIL
1/8 applesauce or it won't rise properly.. lots of FREE recipes at

I was in the grocery store yesterday and saw in the section with the oil an
oil that was for baking and was like 95% less fat than other oils I cant
remember the name but take a look I think it was new and it was in the oil
section with all the other oils. As far as the butter goes I like to use
the ultra promise. It taste the same and only has 5 calories for 2 Tbs. I
am not sure about the Powdered sugar substitute so good luck with that.
Also in the like diabetic section of the store I saw cake mixes by sweet 'n
low might want to check those out too. Happy Birthday!!

I think a better question would be WHERE do you find these subs.? At the
grocery store or GMC or where? I'm trying to slowly stock up BEFORE
surgery. No fat creme cheese is good and now they make a good sugar free
jelly..Kraft i think...but its there.. I also like a bit of fruit yogurt
on top of diet jello.
