Question:
Types of Protein Drinks
I am having Lap RNY on 3/17. I've heard that it is really beneficial to begin protein drinks before surgery. What brands of protein drinks are suggested? I don't want to start something that after surgery I won't be able to have because of the sugar content, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! — Julie Rich (posted on March 2, 2004)

I drink Isopure No Carb protein drink, it's a 20 oz bottle with 40 grams of
protein. I like it because it's light and tastes more like Kool Ade. I
can't tolerate the milky ones. Drinking protein before surgery helps in a
couple of ways. It gets you into the habit of getting your protein in,
plus more protein helps in healing. I'd be cautious about stocking up on
too many before surgery though. I thought I likd atkins shakes. In fact I
loved them before surgery, but after, I can't even stand the smell. Taste
buds do change after surgery, at least for me it did. Good Luck to you :-)

Bally's Health Club has an awesome protein drink that comes already
pre-mix, it has a good taste and no nasty after taste. It also comes in
powder form but I just buy the pre-mixed drink, tastes really good cold,
comes in grape and fruit punch flavors.

My best suggestion would be to look around and order lots of samples first,
then decide what you like before you invest $30 on something you can't
stomach just because someone else prefers the taste. check out:
vitalady.com, wlssuccess.com, i went to my web search and typed in protein
drinks and supplements. look around lots have samples cheap. hope this
helps. Patricia open rny 9-30-03 314/210/185??

I use unjury from unjury.com. Tastes, smells and mixes just like chocolate
milk. They sell samples and ship very fast. Unjury saved me, I could not
find any protein supplement I liked till I found them. Good luck on your
upcoming surgery!

I have been looking, too. My lap RNY is scheduled 3/16/04. I found free
samples of Whey Fruity at http://www.molecularnutrition.net/index2.htm and
a $1 sale on protein samples at http://bamart.com/texas_wls. I ordered the
samples on 2/20 and received them on 2/29 (because of all the pretty snow
we got in SC). I have already tried a few. I thought this was a cheap way
to try several, there are 30+ kinds to try. Good Luck! Rachel

While taking in lots of protein as a pre-op is supposed to help with the
healing process after surgery, don't get too attached to any one brand.
Your tastes will change significantly especially as an early post-op and
what you like now will probably not be what you like a few weeks post-op
and then may like again at 4 months post-op. The Isopure Zero Carb in the
20 oz glass bottles (40 grams of protein per) that look and taste somewhat
like koolaid saved me the first month or so post-op. Shakes would have
made me gag. I took the Isopure, cut in 1/2 with water, poured over ice
and sipped with a straw all day long. After surgery, you can also go to
www.vitalady.com and order sample packs of protein powder to try.

I swear by EAS Advant-Edge Carb Control drinks. They come pre-mixed, in
little silver tetra boxes. They're expensive ($5.86 for four at Wal-Mart,
15 g protein and 4 g carbs per container), but definitely worth it. I
actually CRAVE them (chocolate and vanilla). I hit goal in 10 mos.
