Question:
Does anyone have a hard time keeping down Chicken, or any other meat?
I am 17 months post-op. I have lost 176 pounds and pretty much where I want to be at goal. I still have trouble eating meat. The best source of protein. It seems to just come right back up on me. I'm OK with cheese and other sources but can't figure out why this far out I can't tolerate meat. Even Tuna doesn't sit well. I can take in some fish such as flounder. I can't eat all that much at one sitting either. So have to eat several meals during the day. Anyone else like this? — EMN (posted on February 25, 2004)

I am one year post op and i cannot tolerate any kind of meat except talipa
fish. I don't much like it tho so I don't eat it often. I try to eat meat
of all kinds but it almost always comes right back up. very early out in
the first four months, i could eat chicken, pork and etc. Then suddenly, I
can't. I vomit nearly every dau trying to eat meat. I have just given up.
I have been drinking two shakes a day but am considering going up to three
for the protein. I am really siock of cheese and cottage cheese.

I am 10 months post-op, down 100 lbs., and still having trouble with meat
as well. Usually I can eat a few bites but then have that uncomfortable
feeling like its going to come back up. If I stop when that happens, I can
usually eventually digest it. Actually red wine helps with that. If I
drink anything else (water, etc.), I will definitely throw it up. Chicken
and beef are the worst; tuna doesn't bother me. Early on I put meat in the
food processor and ground it up before eating. I guess that is still an
option tho I don't do it anymore. I'm sure that I don't get enough high
quality protein. Fortunately, I love cheese, cottage cheese, nuts, etc.
However, eating too much of that really slows your weight loss I've found.
Don't know the answer but I share your frustration.

I have the same problem -- but I am only about 3 1/2 months out. When I
went for my 3 month check-up the dietician said we need very MOIST meat.
She said she has a few people 1 year plus, that still cannot do meat. I can
do about 2 or 3 baby bites of meat and that is it. I am not a big seafood
eater, but love shrimp and crab, but I have to be careful with that also.
She suggested crock pot cook meats a couple of times a week because they
stay moist, but watch the fat. She also said do NOT reheat meat in the
microwave because it dries it out! The majority of my protein comes from
shakes and yogurt. I try to stay clear of too much cheese as that can
cause problems with "movement" of the bowels -- if you get my
drift. I understand your frustration -- believe me! In addition,I will
probably never eat eggs again and I use to love omelets! Got sick one too
many times on them. Good luck.

Hi...I'm 30 months out, down 160lbs and have troubles with meats (poultry,
beef, pork) because they can be dry. I always have some dressing or gravy
or something to put on it to make it more moist. If I do this, I don't
have any problems with the meats. I've never had a problem with fish or
any other kind of seafood, though. Denise 316/156

I am 18 months post-op, and cannot tolerate most meats. I cannot tolerate
chicken, but can tolerate turkey - odd, but true. Sometimes I really want
a steak, but if I try it, I almost always throw it back up. I'm OK with
being mostly vegetarian - better for the environment and certainly better
for animals!

i am 26 months out, have lost 120 lbs & cannot tolerate beef or turkey
at all. i have tried to moisten it with applesauce, cranberry sauce, gravy
& sauces to no avail. good thing i was not a big beef & turkey
lover before surgery lol. sometimes tuna stays down sometimes not. i have
the greatest success with flounder, sole, salmon & shrimps. good luck!

I'm 11 months out. I can't eat fresh pork at all, though I can eat cured
pork (ham, bacon) without any problem. I also can't eat peanut butter (but
can eat peanuts, and soy nut butter, and almond butter). Sometimes I can
eat chicken, sometimes I can't, and I never know when it will be OK and
when it won't so I don't order it out. There doesn't seem to be any logic
to how Pouchy works--what she likes and what she doesn't. You're not
alone!

I had surgery the same day as you. And like you, I still can't eat meat or
fish/tuna. If I eat is slooowly, I can maybe tolerate a tablespoon of
ground beef in chili. My diet mainly consists of beans, cheese and popcorn
because I can't eat fruit, vegetables, or bread, either. Very boring diet.
Thanks for sharing--it helps to find out you're not the only one.

Chicken has never set really well with me. I'm about 18 mos. out. I can
do beef and shellfish pretty well though. I still can't do bread
either--it just makes me feel awful when I've tried it. Maybe that's not
such a bad thing to have problems with. <smile>

Hi Ellen- I am only about 3 months post-op and Chicken does not like me at
all. I can eat the canned chicken with some low-fat mayo or plan, but a
bake chicken breast seems to always get me sick. I've thrown up twice
since I've been on solid foods and both times it was chicken. The nurse at
my dr's office said to keep it as moist as possible. Tuna, cod, and
organge roughy I have no problems with. Turkey and even a little bit of a
hamburger did better than the chicken did. Just like others have said-
gravey's and sauces work, but watch the fat and sodium and also use the
crock pot. Good Luck!

I still do better (19 months PO) with beef than poultry! Not sure why that
is, except that I can cook my beef on the underdone side and chicken is
ALWAYS well done.
